I'm getting a suspect diesel noise on start up.

It only lasts a few seconds and then is gone. Sometimes it doesn't appear at all. Are my suspicions correct and the variator is about to go to the FIAT garage in the sky?

Cheers

Jon

Could be oil needs changed or tappets adjusting although you could also be correct.

Spoke to a Fiat mechanic a while back who stated they don't change them as a matter of course anymore but clean them out which often cures the problem.

Get similar knocking Jon... doesnt happen all the time, only at start up and usually not when the engine is cold. Had the engine plugged into a diagnostic computer and it reported no faults.

Does sound a bit "tappety" when running.

Not sure whether to deal with it now or suck it and see.

cheers,

Dan

Taking it in next week to a FIAT specialist in Edinburgh so will get them to investigate further.

Not much of a service history with the car, so I'm getting a new cambelt in for piece of mind.

I'll let you know

Jon

my cinq ticks when I start it up sometimes not all the time , then after a minuet or 2 it stops or if I start driving the tapping gets quicker , Im not worried about it id just like to know what it is, so if you get yours seen to keep me posted on what it was , some one in another thread told me it may be that the tappets need adjusting.

yes your variator is on the way out mate - i have an HGT which has the same engine as mine does the same - mine is going in after crimbo for a 72k service and a cambelt and variator change at fiat cost of £500 dead a bit steep but needs must.
