Technical USB data only or power to dashcam

My daughter has a 2008 Grande Punto. New driver and I'm trying to set up dash cam.
Issue is that the cigarette socket is placed between gear stick and handbrake and the dash cam power lead keeps getting nudged out the socket.
I'd like to power from USB socket in glove box, but when I tried this option, although the dash cam powered up, it didn't work as it's supposed to.
From research, this is because it's only a data connection?
My question is whether an adaptor which is a USB 5v to Cigarette socket 12v would work?

Best thing to use in these circumstances is a fused hardwire kit.
