Thank you that's very kind, but I do have an e-learn cd that someone sent me a while back and it used to open fine but not since I installed Win7 on my laptop???

I'll try it on my Win7 netbook tomorrow.
You could try turning off your antivirus program while you try it. It may be blocking eLearn and not telling you.

I installed my CD onto my Win7 netbook, and it worked fine. Yours may just need uninstalling and reinstalling. If it won't work, PM me your address and I'll send you mine.

It might be my laptop???? Maybe I should run over to the computer section and ask some help... lol

Btw, I'm about to start looking at the brakes again now that I feel less worried about the belt noise/no noise, so should be able to update tomorrow (y)

Today when driving and the belt noise came on for a while alternator faulty warning came up on the dash, so it seems the diagnostic was correct (y) thanks!

also I received the one I ordered from ebay today now hopefully something on my car will get fixed eventually, lol

So it looks like mine is cracked too....

the sun came out to play and we had a lovely day down here today so I decided to to do the alternator today but was hindered by the fact that I seem to not have a 19mm socket :eek: :rolleyes: (I should of course have checked this before I took everything else off... lol

Never mind I'm sure we will get another sunny day in a month or two again... :p

not got a 3/4 inch socket ? = that's 19.05mm, ;)
? is it? I'm from Sweden inches and other weird measurements are alien to me... :bang:

strange about the crack in the body..
seems to be something going.... lol on the other alternator thread too
should be A1 again with a replacement,
worth checking the brushes of BOTH "old + new" to make sure you've not got to change them in a couple of weeks, :bang:

have fun..,

Charlie
Thank you! I'm convinced lots of fun will be had, not least for my neighbours who keep telling me they will buy me a new car if they win the lottery (y) hahaha

I've seen a few posts about these cracking. I think they've all been on alternators with freewheeling pulleys.
My guess would be that when whatever seized, pulley or a bearing, the sudden shock forces caused the crack.

Buy a good used one while stocks last!

The number of cracked ones that forumers have posted about makes me very nervous about buying a used one. Whatever the cause - seized pulley bearings, sudden cooling from driving through deep water, etc - they seem to be a bit fragile. It would be good to know which make(s) the 'weak' ones are.

Well soon enough that should be possible... and everyone please keep your fingers crossed that my "new" one isn't the same make, lol

As I posted much earlier and elsewhere, my alternator was cracked and completely seized and looking at the photo it is a Denso unit like mine. I bought a used one because it had the same dimensions. I toddled down to the local factor and he got out 4 alternators but all were much bigger and I was concerned I would not get them back up between the driveshaft and the steering rack which is why I bought a good used one.
Good luck with the job and don't forget the top spacer!

The failure of the body is not an inherent design flaw, as this body will be used on many vehicles. The mounting points will be determined more by the alternator manufacturer than the vehicle manufacturer, so it is easy for the vehicle manufacturer to source form more than one supplier, and for aftermarket suppliers it means that a standard body can be specced to fit many applications. The larger ones found will be an example of this, where the aftermarket manufacturer has not considered accessibility, only mounting points, terminals, pulley position and output. I think the cause of failure is the seizure of either the freewheeling pulley, or more likely one of the bearings. Something difficult to predict. So an aftermarket alternative would be fine if it can be got into the space.

My advice, pop a used one on now, and save for a new one.
