I've just biought an RAC satnav & am a bit hacked off to say the least.
Thinking I was buying into a solid brand, something that their repair crews might use, etc swayed me to this above a cheapo. I find it doesn't have some of the postcodes I want programmed into it - yet the rac website which uses the same technology (apparently) and maps has all the postcodes. When I looked at the 'about' screen I saw the maps are dated december 2006 yet there is mention on the forums of six-monthly updates.
Apparently, there is an update due out soon (annual? six-monthly? more like 18 monthly) but we are asked to pay £29.99 plus vat for a card with the map installed.
I bought it from Argos & they aren't keen on having it back but as far as I am concerned, it isn't fit for purpose.
(I planned a route today & asked for fastest lorry (seeing as how I am in a bus) and it took me down a road that is only just wide enough. Although there are settings for lorry or car, it doesn't seem to care)
Anybody got new maps? (map date & satnav make/model please)

im afraid the rac sat navs have been quite slated by anyone i know using them. defnitly wouldnt be my choice. as for argos, i get this all the time. you have to get angry and demanding at them. i usually get theirs and tescos angry customers telling me they want a proper sat nav (so they leave with a tom tom or garmin lol)

o and if your using it for a bus then try the tom tom range and use the tom tom home software and you can poi's like low bridge heights, there are a few databases free on the internet which would make it a better tailored soloution for not that much money

Thanks for that, I'd already decided that it had to go back so I took it in & told them it turned itself off when it felt like it. They were going to get a replacement so I asked if I could pay a bit more & have a tomtom.
They offer you a free update if a newer map is available within 30 days of purchase - so now I have a map dated March 2008 & shedloads of local updates via mapshare.
Interestingly, RAC forums wittered about how long it takes to bring out updates so you are lucky that you get them once per year - yet failed to see the argument that a new satnav should have something more recent loaded or a voucher to get the latest.
They also failed to see the argument that as maps are available each year, it's not good that the unit has 18 month old maps.
I've since been on there & told them that RAC should get its maps from teleatlas instead as tomtom get 4 updates per year.
I managed to find the POI database with low bridges etc - thanks for that

ahaha up to date maps, i have a tom tom that is supost to have up to date maps on it and it thinks that a local roundabout to me is a one way street in a circle with 4 roads leading off of it and a one way street in a half-circle with 3 roads leading off of it (that was a roundabout with 5 exits 20+ years ago) is a roundabout. ive been in a jag that had inbuilt satnav and it thought you could get out the end of a deadend road that has been blocked off for 20+ years. the sat nav companys dont know what up to date maps are
