Didn't ascend to the dizzing heights of owning my own business, sadly. The first full year of my apprenticeship (Normand, M/benz at Marble-Arch) I "spannered" for my boss on his F3 Holbay engined Merlyn---I am sure that it did very little for my future prospects in the company, but I sure had a very interesting year! A couple of the small saloons that I watched (between 'spannering' duties, which gave me not a lot of spare time) hammering the Minis and Imps were the 2 Abarth Fiat 600 based racers that the Anstead brother raced. Little did I know then that after my apprenticeship had ended, I would end up AT "Radbourne Racing" under the great (but sadly, late) Geoff Anstead---lovely boss. I did however manage to put some of the skills that I had learned to good use later in my life---I helped set-up 2 M/Benz dealerships in East Anglia, from scratch. However, my love of the "Abarth" brand has never diminished.
It was only a small business , so not that dizzying, but I found it a lot less stressful than working as a foreman, trying to keep the boss, mechanics, customers, Mot Inspectors, etc. all happy at the same time, it was a strange company, we were agents for Mazda, Wartburg, Moskvich and Lada. In the past they had also been agents for Rover, Land Rover, Hillman. The Mazdas were at the time of the RX3s and 4s, so rebuilt a few of those when they still had carbs and points, which reminds me the Wartburgs had three sets of points and coils etc, so they all had to be set up and timed individually , especially as they had pressed together cranks that occasionally moved! WE used to send them to Alfa Bearings at Dudley to be rebuilt I recall
The best thing I found was I could choose my customers, many I knew for over 40 odd years, they knew the quality of work and I knew their cheques wouldn't bounce as all had been recommended by another customer. I recall a phone call from a business trying to sell debt collection and them saying "a small business like yourself must have a lot of problems with bad debts?" I said no, only three in all my time trading and I got everyone back

, so that was the end of that conversation.

Only a bit of Class 4 Villiers Kart racing late 60s early 70s, I was never involved with proper performance cars, apart from the odd Hill Climbs we are a long way from decent circuits.
I make no claim to the specialist knowledge, like your self and others on Forum bring to the table, I have always worked on what ever came through the doors, so just a good varied general knowledge. Along with literally several hundred other cars and motorbikes that I have owned over the years I have had 1960s Fiat 500 and the 600 with the suicide doors, along with many other models, also a 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV with the Bertone body, before the horrible rusty wedge versions. In fairness I have only run cheaper vehicles not showroom condition, mainly dictated by my poor choice in ex wives and the 5 children etc
