Re: Underheating since bought, this morning overheating :( "Black Betty 1.2 cinq)

Hey everyone, nipped out in the car today to price up the parts, pretty happy with the prices! :D

Issue is being an engine converstion I need the engine code to make sure I get the right parts, where abouts is it stamped?

I got stuck in some traffic but the engine did not get hot at all this time :S bearing in mind the thermostat is out at the moment and will be replaced tomorrow morning, could there have been a potential air block somewhere causing it to get hot? Had no trouble with it after 20 mins of driving it got no where near even 70 degrees (obviously because the stat is out but atleast its not overheating!) I will check to be safe tomorrow morning :)

Chances are, you don't. If it's SPI and 1242 it's a P60 lump.

Ring Big Mick at eurocarcare in Derby (Google will find). An alternative is to count the notches in the belt.

But, the engine code -- or, at least, the block code, is stamped on a protrusion from the block at the level of the cylinder head at the timing end. They can be pretty indistinct, so a little scotchbrite helps.

Hi

Fit a new thermostat.

Hey guys,

Here's an update, Got the new thermostat fitted and sorted out the vacuum pipes (8&9 were looped together!), now the car is running better with less bog and holds temp PERFECT! very happy :D

Hey everyone, still having some small issues with the cooling system,

People are saying that non official fiat thermostats are rubbish! :bang:

The car does warm up but barely past 70 so the heaters are weak as anything.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have bled the system a few times and it seems to have no air in it!

Re: Underheating since bought, this morning overheating :( "Black Betty 1.2 cinq)

how hot is everyones cento's running in this cooler weather??? My sei still not wired up the gauge but it seems to take ages of idling before the fan comes on and that is turbo'd!! When i was driving fraz's sei that never got that hot whilst moving about, around 70* most of the time (well it has no cooling fan atm and it didn't overheat once during the time i had it). And my Punto is running really cool as well. Its only when stationary in traffic that it ever goes upto 80* atm. Heaters in said cars is still very good though, you might just have a airlock in heater matrix??

Re: Underheating since bought, this morning overheating :( "Black Betty 1.2 cinq)

Agreed, last time I used mine it barely got above 75 as long as I was moving and even then the heater was still pretty damn toasty, not likely to be an issue with the overall cooling system, hopefully just confined to the heater matrix.

ps. I'm the aforementioned Fraz btw ;)

Edit: Thinking about it, even in the height of summer it never got above 80 as long as I was moving. Sitting still for more than a few seconds with no fan was pretty sketchy though, lol

Re: Underheating since bought, this morning overheating :( "Black Betty 1.2 cinq)

Hmm, mine doesn't go above 75 weather the heaters are on or not, but I don't get much hot air at all, you can feel it with your hands next to the vent but if you turn the fan up it cools down so the whole interior never really warms up. I will bleed the system again after work tomorrow, thanks for the advice, she is running so much better these days!

Hi

The coolant temperature should get the the themostat opening temperature pretty quickly, if you cave a gauge that should be near to 90C or so...

The thermostats can fail open fail shut or stick partly open etc. I replace regular.

The heater control is a little tap and can have a reduced travel, it should be a nice warm heater when full on.

Air locks can cause problems, you need to bleed after any loss of coolant.

Stopping at traffic lights or crawling in heave traffic my fan will come on. There is not much difference between the thermostat temp and the fan temperature switch.

You get better MPG when the thermostat is 'working'.

It has a brand new thermostat fitted but the engine still gets nowhere near 90

what temp are you getting if you leave it running just idling? Have you tried just leaving it running on the drive when you get home, it not really possible that it doesn't get hot when just sat idling unless the thermostat is always open and/or the fan cuts in too early.

I have been in traffic and it nears 90 degrees sometimes, I can't leave it idling on my drive because the neighbours will moan :( But even in stop start traffic it barely warms up properly

Re: Underheating since bought, this morning overheating :( "Black Betty 1.2 cinq)

my feeling is that its alright and you just have an issue with the heater, an airlock or something not moving as far as it should when changing temp setting etc. You could check the resistance of the temp sender for the gauge to make sure its sending correct signals but easiest way to test it really is see what temp the gauge says when the fan kicks in. Come leave it running on my drive if you want, never had any complaints before, she's not that loud really. Or just sit on the side of a road thats not yours :p

Hi

When you start up from cold the heater hoses (both) should warm up first gradually and get too hot to hold, (close to boiling) then the rad hose should get warm quickly so you cannot hold it, then the fan should start cycling.

If the heater hoses stay luke warm and are the same as the rad hose temperature then the (new) thermostat is kaput..., even premium ones can fail immediately, suggest ask for replacement on warranty, supply of good act.

If the heater hoses are not the same temperature as they warm up you have an air lock or the heater valve is closed or broken.
