Got this off a website:

Q: At what age are children / young people allowed into pubs?

Currently, if a landlord has a children’s certificate, children under 14 are allowed into a pub, if accompanied by an adult over 18. If the landlord does not have a children’s licence, under 14s are not allowed into the bar area of the pub. Under the 2003 Licensing Act, children under 16 will be allowed into a pub, but must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. They will not be allowed at the bar and will not be allowed to buy or consume alcohol. Only persons aged 18 or over are allowed to buy and consume alcohol in pubs.

Q: At what age can you drink and/or buy alcohol?

The legal drinking age in the UK is 18 in licensed premises (e.g. pubs and clubs). It is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy alcohol, whether in a supermarket, a pub or an off-licence. It is also illegal to buy alcohol for someone under the age of 18. The only exception is that 16 and 17 year-olds may buy and drink beer or cider (or wine, when the Licensing Act 2003 comes into force around November 2005) as an accompaniment to a table meal at a licensed premises, but only in an area specifically set aside for meals.

Ah yes, wise move that. In the country (UK) with the worst binge drinking problem in Europe what better than to start them young?!!!

Hmm...it's acceptable in France and binge drinking doesn't really exist there (at least yet).

When I was in France at the age of 12 I was allowed a bottle of wine with a meal, this was a school trip and the school were OK with it too. Actually they encouraged it.

TBH the rest of europe has a different attitude to alchohol. its more of a social thing.
cant really explain why but its just veiwed differently. when i was visiting rungis market in paris for work we were drinking beer at 6am.
when i worked in Dresden there were 24 hour bars where we would often drink through till 6/7am and have a great night and there was no trouble. they didnt even have bouncers.

must admit i get on with the european viewpoint and drinking style, not really into this mad binge drinking culture.
