Re: Tyre pressure?

Depends what wheels you have on there, R15s?
Even then they are recommended pressures and you have to go with your feelings and the warning signs like tyre wear.

Pretty unbelievable if you think about it to quote 1.9 bar for the entire Stilo range on R15s from the lightweight 1.2 to the much heavier 1.8s and JTDs

To be honest im not entirely sure so ill try and remember to check and then ill post on here again to gauge opinion! Thanks for your help though!

Re: Tyre pressure?

Alot of road noise can depend also on the make and typre of tyre you have fitted. Tread patterns vary and what might seems fine on one make/model of car, they will howl like a banshee on another. What tyres are they?

Re: Tyre pressure?

Hi all, just searching the forum, I have a 3dr 1.6 16v active and I was looking at the tyre pressures in the handbook quoting 1.9 bar which i think is around 28/29 psi which I thought was a bit low. My previous Fiesta was kept at 35 and above. As people have mentioned is 32psi the best or should I stick with what the handbook says?
You can experiment a bit but never go higher than what the handbook quotes for heavily laden or constant high speed.

Re: Tyre pressure?

My tyre centre advised me that the Stilo pressures are to be ignored, he advised 34psi all round and promised me that I'd see improved fuel economy and even tyre wear, a year on, he was correct.

Re: Tyre pressure?

Ok had a look round this evening and on the front i have:

GS-Confort-Auto Active 195/60R15 88H &
Goodride H600 195/60R15 88H

On the back both:

Dunlop SP Sport 220E 195/65R15 91H

So should I go with something like 32/34psi all round or stick with what the handbook says?

Re: Tyre pressure?

Lose the Dunlop so-called sport tyres as soon as you can...they're sh*te!

You've also got a narrower tyre on the front than on the back.

Not narrower Cris but the aspect ratio is incorrect 60 and not 65 this is to do with the tyre dia not width both sets are 195 :) and as they are on as an axle set then its not illegal as they are not mixed on the same axle ..never the less I wouldn't do it and even use the same tyres in a complete set as some tyres inflate differently to others as the two on the front axle will :)

Re: Tyre pressure?

You're right, sorry, brain fart! It's been a long day. It was only a couple of weeks ago I went into great depth explaining what the sidewall markings meant, what the PCD and aspect ration were and even had a stab at explaining ET to a newish member. Now look at me,,,

I had mixed tyres. The crappy Dunnies on the rear and seriously chepo crap tyres on the front. Not anymore though...the wonders of buying a Rim and tyre package!

Re: Tyre pressure?

Well the next time I have a bit of money ill think about changing and getting a uniform set all round. Any recomendations for low noise and good wear etc?

Also is 32/34psi a good pressure to use or should I stick with what the hand book says?

Thanks again guys!

Re: Tyre pressure?

Start off with the recommended pressures and go from there. Much depends on your tyre make, what weight you normally carry and even your driving style. Remember too that pressures are quoted for when the tyres are cold

Re: Tyre pressure?

If it helps when I stuck the 16s on mine I had a gander at a tyre chart on the wall of the fitters. It said 35PSI for the 16s which I did and haven't looked back since.

Mixing different tyres on the same axle is seriously bad news. I wouldn't be prepared to push a car at all in that state and I'd certainly make it a priority to fix.

High tyres pressures are good for economy and generally good for tyre wear but aren't best for keeping your car on the road (n) As Deckchair has said it generally comes down to your own driving style as long as you remember that tyre pressures can dramatically effect handling.

You also need to watch that profile mismatch doesn't effect ASR (if you haven't got it then it wont matter)

Oh dear thats scary, i shall try and change them when i can!

Hmmm... interesting! I have been doing 2.1 Bar (30ish PSI) normal and 2.3 Bar (33ish PSI) laden with the 16vt wheels. On the 1.6 this was ok but think the heavier JTD probably needs the extra air

Re: Tyre pressure?

Well there you go, one of the causes of outside edge wear is under pressure tyres in corners.

If you look at the "recommended" tyre pressure chart for Stilos on 16s it says 2.1bar for the ENTIRE Stilo range. The JTDs and Abarths are over 300lbs heavier than the 1.2. You don't need to be a scientist to see that can't work

Re: Tyre pressure?

Interesting - I am on 16s as well, looks like I may increase my pressures, although I do like to rag it as well. I have always just used the 30PSI, as per the manual, not any more....

So up to 33 all round? Or a bit more? I don't want performance affected though.

Re: Tyre pressure?

I can only say what i use Stu and you have to make your own mind up. I use 2.3bar (33-34psi) on 16s for about a year now and it runs as straight as a dart now with a nice flat footprint of even tyre wear across the tread

Before it would camber follow and need constant steering corrections. Even the 1.6 with air con is 200lbs heavier than a 1.2, almost all of it on the front

Re: Tyre pressure?

I'm on 17s but I inflate the tyres to 34psi the same as Decks :)
