OK, my twinair has now arrived and is proudly sitting in my driveway. Must say the run so far has reminded what a great character the engine has, so no regrets. Couple of points to note so far.... yes it does have an ARB, and I have done two runs so far. The mpg on the route back from the garage (20 miles) was...... wait for it, wait for it

47.3

I have had another short bash with me and three others in the car, and it fell to 43.4.

The outisde temp was +2, and it rides on 15" alloys, should anyone be interested.

Nice one. (y)

New TwinAir owner here....

Picked up the car today (it's the wife's car really, but she was working today, and - as chance would have it - I was not) and I could not possibly wait until tomorrow! Only went in to the dealer 2 weeks ago on the off chance - wife loved the car, I loved the 'tech', and here we are. Car in stock, exactly as she wanted, quick delivery, fab deal and trade in.

Been checking the forums, noted the mpg issues, but - bloody hell - the test drive 2 weeks ago was spot on.

In the 28 miles so far I've given it a good old thrash (just as the engine demands) and got nowhere near what it should be getting, but don't care. Engine sounds like a bee with attitude, growling, rumbling and gurgling away. Noisy when you want it to be, and quiet when you're not pushing it.

Anyway, she traded in a 1.2 Grande Punto (2 years old) which averaged around 35mpg in mainly city driving. Not great, but not bad. I get 55+ out of my 1.5 Megane diesel normally, but doing her 'run' I get no better than 40. If she gets that or more, I'd be delighted. On what I've seen so far, I bet she does, and the Megane (a good car, by the way) has not 10% of the 500's flair!

Crazy idea I know but it might be a good idea to take it easy at least for a few hundred miles to run the engine in

35.4mpg is pretty bad for a small eco car. The wife's 2.5litre Volvo C70 does better

BUT it is the first run for a new car, they need to loosen up. Even though they say you can run one of these cars normally from new you shouldnt really. Take it easy for the first 500 miles let the thing get run in properly and I think you will see the mpg shoot up

Plus it's cold at the moment which only compounds the problem.

Had a run to the coast and back this morning, so more opportunity to test the car out.

Overall impression still very positive, although a couple of points to note; it seems to be very road sensitive, what I mean is when the surface breaks up the car gets somewhat jittery. There is a stretch on the run into North Berwick which causes the ride on my Mercedes to jiggle and bang and I was expecting the 500 to be a mess, but to be honest it could have been worse. It also seems to settle down more the faster you go.

Overall it reminds me of my 1st car actually, a 205 GTI 1.6

Getting to grips with Blue&Me, I guess its like an F1 driver with the multi functions steering wheel! Fuel mix 3, change break bias, pit lane limiter.....

Very impressed on the motorway, quite happy at speed and I used eco mode once up to speed.

MPG for this jaunt? 40.3mpg.

Thanks for the tips on 'running in'. Knew the score already (my first of 12 new cars was a long long time ago, when you were scared to even start the engine) but I could not resist - and it's the wife's car, not mine, after all! It pulls so quickly from the off, it's quite hard to be light on the pedal - and you can be surprised how quickly the revs build. Been for a good old spin today, with the wife driving (boo). After the 1.2 Punto, she's more keen than me to hold on to the gears... Can't fault the car, a bit jiddery in the back for the bairns, but up front it's great. Far too early to give good indication on mpg, but driving mostly through Leeds (lots of stop/start - and that's fun too) and a quick blast on the M62, the trip computer readout after 100 miles or so is just short of 45mpg. I know it's nowhere near 100% reliable - until proper filling up and all that - but I reckon that's not too far short of what my diesel would get, given the route we took. On the flat(ish) section of the M62, with me, the missus and 2 kids in the back, it seemed to be pulling 65+mpg at at steady 70mph, again not far off what I would normally see from the diesel Megane. So, unless you stamp on the gas, early indications would seem to be that you will get reasonable economy coupled with a very eager and willing engine.
