Hi All, I am trying to get a Fiat Multipla with a stock 600 running . It has been sitting for at least five years since it last ran. The car is an all original example with the factory wiring still intact. Here is a quick run down of what I have purchased new:

Spark plugs
Points
Condenser
Rotor (Found to be shorter than current Rotor)
Coil

The car has a Weber 26 IMB which I have install a new set of gaskets, and gave the carb a through cleaning.

In trying to get the engine going, I have only been able to get it to pop (back fire) thru the carb 1 or 2 times. This typically occurs when the choke is applied and the throttle wide open. I have checked the spark plugs for spark and they appear to have that. Cylinder one spark plug appears to be covered in more soot than the other plugs. Not sure if that may be an indication of a bad gasket, or internal engine problems. I am also not sure what the gap on the points should be. I have read some threads but I have really be able to find specific numbers.

Does the carb have to be primed? I am used to old Chevy and Fords that have accelerator pumps that shoot gas into the cab. The Weber I have been told draws gas, via vacuum pressure sucking the fuel down into the motor.

A couple of other items, I think there should be a ground wire that is attached to the bolt on the water pump. I am not sure where the other end goes, and if this would cause a problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to see this car run....

Thanks in Advance

Could be a number of things, particularly if the engine hasn't run for a long time. I assume it turns over OK? You need to look up what your settings are supposed to be, but points gap I suspect should be 15 thou, right enough to get it to run. Then check the timing, perhaps 10 degrees BTDC? and then make sure the firing order is right. Spark plug gap probably 25 thou.

Check the tappet clearances and if they are good, give the car another try.

Fuel arrives at the carb from the fuel pump and vacuum draws the fuel/air mix into the engine. I assume there is fuel getting to the carb as popping and backfiring suggests fuel is there.

If no luck check compressions.

Hopefully someone will chip in who knows the car better than I, but this should get you started!

No idea what your wire is! How thick is it?

Regards

Ian
