I'm looking to buy a 1.6ELX petrol Multipla (there is a well-priced '00 near me) and I will need it to pull a three-berth 18' caravan on fairly long journeys over the summer. Anyone use theirs to tow large loads and prepared to comment before I spend all my money on an ugly mobile greenhouse? No, the one I'm looking at doesn't have a towbar so I can't even try it.

Thx,

David.

You may need to find out the towing weigh/kerb weight of the multipla, might need to go see it at the dealers.

Obviously you then look at the maunfacture plate on your caravan which displays the weight of the van.

TBH and IMO i think it would pull it but would put a lot of strain on the engine, the diesel would be a better choice

Diesel is ok for tractors and trains. It is also very good for cleaning bicycle chains. It should never have been adopted as a fuel for powering motor cars as it is against nature and all that is good - it even sounds wrong - duff duff duff, see.

The pulling capability of the car exceeds the weight of the caravan - I pulled it with ease with an Alfa 155 2.0 but I need to hear from a Multipla driver who has pulled a caravan as to whether they consider it a suitable vehicle for towing. Anyone?

the towing wieght for a multipla jtd elx 110 >> is >>1300 KG The caravan club recomend that you tow 85.% of that to be safe so if you said 1000 kg to be safe youd be well in by the way the nose wieght is 70 kg hope this helps Dont get your towbar fitted by fiat there price is £268.00 I bought the new tow bar for £90 off internet and fitting it my self looks dead easy will get some 1 to wire it up though £30 to wire up

Ok.. I don't have a Multi but I do have its more conventional cousin the Marea. The JTD is such a better car than the 1.6 as they have more power, and much much more torque. As for noise and oily stains - The FIAT common rail diesel has got to be one of the best engines available, only surpassed by the next generation MJet!

Someone needs to wash their mouth out with regards to diesels. especially coming from someone contemplating towing a caravan! The mortal enemy of traffic free roads. ;)

As for fitting towbar, If you have patience and you're not too freaked out about drilling big holes in your chassis then go for it! I did! (y)

I fitted a towbar to my petrol 'pla last night and it was an easy enough job - Bosal kit from www.micksgarage.ie (recommended if you are in Ireland).

I have now driven three different diesel Multiplae and am unapologetic about how nasty, rough and tractory they are. The worst had 128k mls, the best a 03 with 35k mls but I would prefer to be dragged behind an LPG powered Ritmo than drive a diesel Multipla.

Now, where did I put that caravan...

We aren't even in the same country - take a chill-pill. We have some of the most uncongested roads in Europe - why do you think so many UK drivers bring their Elises and MX-5's over here for summer driving holidays?

If there was no other choice and I had to drive a diesel car, I would buy a horse and thats all there is to say on the matter.

Sorry! I jest.. ;) <-- see.

They take their MX5s there for the world hairdressing conference...

As for diesels - only one thing to say.. Audi R10. 'nuff said.

Good luck with your caravan, unless you bring it over here then i hope it gets driven through by a Hilux :p
