General Top Speed

General Top Speed

I find most top speeds utterly pointless. Most cars will crack over a ton. And this is proved by some 1.2 16v not being far off the 1.8 16v engines difference is getting there the 1.8 would leave the 1.2 standing. :)

Not many if any mechanics i know do this as part of a service.

exactly, which is why its so important to do it yourself. a dealer 'should' do it (its on their schedule to check/adjust cable) but even then you'd be lucky to have it done.

there are many things that a mechanic would never do, so you have to do them yourself. would you expect them to lubricate your locks or window runners? or grease your bonnet release? or even change your coolant and brake fluid (altho they still charge you for it)?

An chance of a guide how to do this jug. Would be nice to know :p

its in haynes, see adjusting accelerator cable.

Well you've just proven my point. The cable was stretched and not re-adjusted on the service and hence when correctly re-adjusted gave you more open throttle, hence more power. Not trying to argue, but i doubt fiat set the cable at 85%, if more power could be had by stretching it more.

i've made this adjustment on many brand new cars from a variety of manufacturers and never once have i seen a correctly adjusted cable from the factory.

test the theory, go to a fiat dealer (or indeed any brand dealer) and get someone to press the accelerator to the floor on a brand new car while you watch the throttle body, then try to push it further open by hand. you'll find the butterfly valve never opens fully with the factory cable tension. i dont know why they do this but i'm sure there is a good reason.

So just run through that again jug please. ive had a look at my acceleror pedal and theres a lil bolt or sumthing at the back of it? what do i do with that? it improve acceleration?
thanks

if you adjust the bolt under the pedal so that the pedal can be pushed further down, this will pull the accelerator cable further, which will open the butterfly valve in the throttle body more, which will allow air to enter the engine more quickly. this will improve acceleration (if the cable was not already adjusted correctly).

you want to adjust it so that the butterfly valve is fully open when the accelerator pedal is fully pressed. you dont want to make it tighter than that because you will stretch the cable or damage the throttle body linkage.

you can also adjust the cable tension on the throttle body, there is a clip that you can remove and then refit in a different position to make the cable tighter or looser. if you follow the accelerator cable to the throttle body, where it joins you will see a round black plastic part with a small metal clip on it. you can pull the clip off to reposition it in a better place.

its hard to describe without having pics, and i dont have any.
