General Top Speed

General Top Speed

on tueday evening i had 119mph (gps confirmed) out of my girlfriend's mk2 punto sporting (same 1.2 16v engine as bravo). this was on a flat stratch of road and it definately could have kept on going (loads of revs left in 6th) but i had to slow down for traffic. even my bravo cant get much more than 120mph, which tells me every car should have a 6 speed gearbox. why dont they?!

Its not just about the gearbox or bhp. Aerodynamics play a huge role in top speed. I had a rover 216 that was tuned to around 135bhp and could only get just over 130mph on it. That was running 17" wheels instead of the stnd 15" aswell.

I've had 162mph gps verified from my coupe but ran outta road more than anything.

the bravo's drag coefficent is better than the mk2 punto's, so the bravo should find it easier to hit top speeds. i think the extra weight a bravo has (90kgs in this case) makes a big difference.

AQccording to the old bill that pulled me over i was at 122mph on the A1(M) in a bravo 1.6 hlx dont know if that was the true speed but i did get a ban over it though

lol. i dont really agree with the way they automatically ban you for more than 100mph. 122mph isnt very dangerous on a quiet motorway imo.

well, Barney (in his healthier days ie last week) once showed nearly..........................

Wait for it..............................

70 yes 70 mph!!! I was stunned :D

i hit just over 128mph in my 1.6i 16v with induction kit and modified accelerator pedal (which i think only me and jug know about ;))

but that was on a slight downhill...*ahem*

hit 125mph in my old pug 306 1.4 8v carb doesnt make sense to me lol :p

when i had the box on Patch i could hit 123 mph.... on the punto box i can only hit 110 - 115 if im really really pushing it, but for me the acceleration gains are soooooooo warth it, even if i do go through a box every few months... personally i think the punto box knocks off around a second 0 - 60, but have yet to confirm this. will be on the strip later this year and will have a damn good look then, see what shes doing :)

i still say patch deserves a 6 speed conversion. thats why she keep chewing up diffs, she's not happy with a mere 5 gears.

i know Jug, just couldnt justify paying the extra with having to do the head gasket at the same time and all that goes with it (i went to the extent of getting a full top end set, belts and tensioner etc etc etc and a new clutch)

but its something on the cards for later this year, will be keeping my eyes peeld for a good box and all the gubbins that go with it and take it from there

I havent taken the Bravo to its limit yet. I've had it up to just over 130mph then I eased off but I could still feel it wanting to pull so much more (but I didnt want to )

Also it had a blowing downpipe at the time. Would be interested to see what it can do once I've had the exhaust completely sorted.

fill me in??

under the accelerator pedal there is a bolt you can adjust to give the pedal more travel (use an allen key). there is also a clip on the accelerator cable where it joins the throttle body which can be used to adjust cable tension.

you want to set it up so that the butterfly valve is fully open exactly when the bolt under the pedal hits the floor. from the factory they are usually set to only open approx 85% of the way, meaning you should notice a big improvement in acceleration once you do this. it made a hell of a big difference on my car.
