My boyfriend keeps telling me that i put too much oil in my car and that 'everyone knows' that too much oil is worse than too little. i find this difficult to believe. Is it true? The oil light was on but the dipstick showed the oil way above the flat part of the stick. I put more in anyway. He says i shouldn't have. I've had the car for 9 months (bought 2nd hand - it's a 1997) but never changed the oil, only topped it up a few times. Is it better to change it?
Any help apreciated- thanks

Too much and too little oil are both bad. Too little will mean no engine lubrication, and engine wear at a massivley accelerated rate. Not only that, but the oil also cools the engine. With too much oil, I believe that the crankshaft will hit the oil, causing it to froth up, which stops it being circulated around the engine correctly.
As luke says, the oil light is for oil pressure, rather than level. If it's coming on, then there's a problem of some sort, such as too little oil, the oil is so thin it's turned to water, or a faulty oil pump or similar.
