Nope, if your HC was sky high then maybe but its not.

Re: Guaranteed solution to your problem!

Honestly schumaniac i dont really think that it would work giving him a back hander cause there boss is always there boss is always there making sure that they are always working.when i was down there i heard the boss say to one of the mechanics get back to work i dont pay you to stand and talk all day.he is one crabit sh@t to say the least or i would have tryed a back hander lol

Re: Re: Guaranteed solution to your problem!

sorry tom i dont know what you mean when you said nope,if your HC is sky high then maybe not sorry for sounding dumb lol

Re: Re: Re: Guaranteed solution to your problem!

Dirty broken down oil can vapourize.

Oil fumes created from dirty oil create a high HC.

If your oil is more than 1 year old it needs changing anyway. I know your HC are ok but your car will still run much better if your oil needs changing and it gets changed. MY CO was about 1.3 - i changed oil and removed air filter and it went down to something silly low about 0.09.

First thing to do before your MOT is to service the car fully.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Guaranteed solution to your problem!

i dont really know when the oil was last changed couse i only bought the car about 4 months ago but could be a good idea changing it anyway cheers

Re: Re: Re: Re: Guaranteed solution to your problem!

His lambda reading is lean which makes me think its not oil related. If it was I'd expect the lamda to be high (ie rich).

It never hurts to change the oil, it rules out one more thing and as you say it should be done once a year. For the sake of £20 its a false economy not to do it.

I've just had a similar problem.

The exhaust emmision results you are experiencing are very similar to ones I have been having with my Mazda 626. I'll try to keep it short but basiacally my Co level was 1.85% = fail. I'd tried every trick in the book, new sparkers, new air filter, no air filter, etc, etc, etc. The advice was that the catalytic convertor was main suspect but possiblt Lambda/oxy sensor. I did both an on car Dynamic test of the Lambda and a off car bench check. Although the sensor was slow to respond when cold as soon as it had a bit of heat soak in it , it was very fast acting kicking out 0.85vdc peak, my cars ECU only needs to see 0.6vdc for a good signal. heres a link of how to test them : http://www.davep1.freeserve.co.uk/rover/tech/lambda.htm If your Lambda is bad you can buy a universal replacement from here for £30 ( all inc) : http://www.buypartsby.com/
I bought a s/h Cat from a scrappy and the CO levels dropped and everything else passed too, however the CO was still 0.70% which is more than twice the amount allowed. Knowing that i had checked or changed evrything else and the onlything that had chand ged was the S/h Cat , i figured that it was better but still not good enough ( it had come off a car 1 year younger than my 10 year old effort ). I bit the bullet and bought a brand new Cat from here, ordered it at 16:30 it was at my door by noon next day,£125 delivered to my door, http://www.bistrecarsales.co.uk/catalytic_converters.htm . I popped it onto my car and went for another MOT. guess what , it passed, with flying colours ! infact me and the testing mechanic had to really try hard to get the CO to rise above zero. The new Cat also brought down the other figures too, even though they where passable before.

If the only problem with your car is the fact that you have too high CO level then it could very well be your Cat. Heres a good link for testing Lambda sensors: http://www.davep1.freeserve.co.uk/rover/tech/lambda.htm.

Obviously it is a bit of a chance spending £125 on a new cat but it worked for me this week . Hope this helps.
BTW my other car is a Fiat Brava 100 sx which is why I'm here.

Sid.

Re: I've just had a similar problem.

http://www.cats-direct.com is cheaper for cats :)

You should really be seeing 0.9v in a blowtorch flame, certainly thats my experience with lambdas.

Do you know what the lambda and HC reading on your mot was? A dead cat should give high HC's as well as high CO.

Re: I've just had a similar problem.

I suppose I should have added that the main reason I'm here is that my piece of sh!t Fiat Brava 100 sx is driving like...a peice of ....
It constantly keeps cutting out and stalling , whether it is Hot or Cold. It only happens during slow manouvring eg Parking, or just pulling away from stand still. It used to be a really nice car to drive until my local Fiat dealers changed the Timing belt and tensioner mech about 18 months ago. It is probably something as simple as a loose or dislodged connection, but i just haven't had time to look yet.

My 10 year old Mazda has a really neat diagnostic socket that you can check the codes and reset the memory with a jumper wire and a 12V LED, can you do this on the Fiat ? I'd be interested to try it just to see if there are any codes stored. New topic I think ..

Re: Re: I've just had a similar problem.

I wish you could do that on a Fiat.....

Did it start straight after the cambelt was done? Its either cam/crank sensors (which are easy to damage if you are a hamfisted gorilla) or they got one of the cams a tooth out. Both have happened to people on here.

Does the injection light come on at all while driving?

Re: Re: Re: I've just had a similar problem.

Just to reiterate most of the stuff I'm refering to here is for a Mazda 626 , i just thought it was relevant/loosly connected.

I tried the Cat people you linked to in Notts, Tom , but couldn't get a reply on Monday about lunchtime. (maybe they where having their lunch :) ) The cheapest quote i got from my local 'budget' exhaust dealers was cica £275+, so i was happy to get next day del for £125 and do it myself from the people i used in wales, I think ther was only a few little quid in it.

You are right about the 0.9v with a blow torch, i think that my Mazdas lambda sensor is very borderline 'good' but it seems to be just good enough. Quite a scary test when you first do it I thought i would melt something at first , but then figured that when my Lambda is sitting there 12" away from the exhaust ports at 4500rpm for a few hours on the motorway , it must glow like Ruddolphs nose :)

Just for info: The car always passed the Natural idle tests, my fast idle test results where:
The pass marks are:
CO 0.30% HC 200ppm lambda 0.96 - 1.03

With original old Cat fitted:
CO = 1.85 % fail
HC = 200 Pass ( just !)
Lambda = 0.96 fail (0.97 - 1.03

With slightly newer s/h cat fitted:
CO = 0.79% fail
HC = 87 ppm pass
Lambda = 1.01 pass

With brand new Cat fitted:
CO = 0.00% pass
HC = 14 ppm pass
Lambda = 1.00 pass

Overall PASS :)

Yeah overall all the reading went down with the new Cat. I'm tempted to take my old one out of the bin now and save the new one for next years MOT ;)
You obviously know what you are talking about Tom, I'll reply to the Fiat stuff on the other thread i started about Fault code reading, I have the bit between my teeth now and feel a row coming on at my local fiat dealers.

Re: Re: Re: Re: I've just had a similar problem.

Just back from fiat went to get a lamda sensor they were going to charge me £70.80 until i told them what to do with it lol. i was looking at the universal ones.cheers to sid an coke for the link www.buyparts.com its only £35 plus delivery .can any one tell me if this will work on my 1.4 97 bravo i hope so couse i dont realy want to give fiat £70 un less.i have to and i am realy hating driving my girlfriends pug 306 it has no power steering so its like driving a tank lol once again cheers in advance
