Here is a cupple of questions for tom or anyone else that can help me it driving me mad ok here i go i have a 97 r reg 1.4sx it has just failed emmisions test for its mot.ok went to the local garage an got a diagnostic test done failed time after time after the guy spent 4hours trying everything but put it thru the computer an still failed.he said has checked everything on the car but still no joy so he said it could be the single point injecter but not sure so i had to pay him £53.then he told me to go to a fiat garage so that is what i am going to do but will this defeinalty find out what the prob is an have you got a clue what it could be an how much could i,ll be looking at getting billed with.i know it could be a million things but i just thout i would ask cheers ian

Have you got the emissions report to hand? There are quite a few points it has to pass and I can't help unless I know which bit failed.

Re: Re: tom can you please help me

alright tom i have not got the papers on me left them at work silly me.anyway here is what i can remember the car was 1.041 an the limit is 1.030 and the second fast idile was 1.052 it was the fast idile speed that had that failed normal was okay hope this can help you cheers ian

Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

There are 3 sets of numbers, HC, CO and lambda, need to know them all.

Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

sorry tom is it ok to give you them tommrow as i left them in work thanks again ian

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

OK, hopefully its a simple thing.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

alright there tom i have the sheets in front of me
Fast Idle Test
min max
Engine Speed =2715rpm Pass 2450 2950
CO level at 2715rpm =4.27% Fail - 0.30
HC level at 2715rpm =137ppm Pass - 200
Lambda at 2715rpm =0.89 Fail 0.97 1.03

Natural Idle Test
Fail
Engine Speed =879rpm Pass 700 950
CO level at 879rpm =2.84% Fail - 0.35

Heres the stuff the mechenic done to try and fix it
1) Seal exhaust system
2) Clean engine management wiring multi
3) Plug connections : secure h.e.g.o sensor
4) Connection ( plug broken )
5) Replace air element - retest emissions
6) Remove h.e.g.o sensor - clean sensor tip
7) Refit. Treat with fuel cleaning additive
8) Re-test
i think that is i just copied it word for word so i hope that can hope you understand it all tom cheers ian

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

Could it be the infamous Lambda sensor?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

here daz i think you could be right there do you know how much it would cost an are they easy to fit or is a job for the robbing buggers at fiat lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

ITs an option BUT I'd expect high HC count as well as high CO.

I'd say its a blockage somewhere or an airleak. I would have expected the air filter to do something.

How old is the car? mileage?

www.lambda-sensor.com and look at fuel school
http://www.cats-direct.com/ for a 4 wire lambda £25+vat

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

OK, the lambda is indicating lean mix so there is an exhaust leak before the lambda making it read low and add more fuel.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

High CO is normally caused by an bad mixture of air/fuel i.e. too much air or too much fuel and not enough of the other.

-Remove your air filter completely for the next test but put it back in after.
-Leave you car on a fast idle 2.5k for 15mins and make sure that its not had chance to cool down before your next MOT.

If you do the things above you CO emissions should drop.

Also its worth you taking your car to a garage which doesn't charge you for a fail therefore you can take it back a few times, either that or try and borrow an emissions tester so you can experiment your self with things.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

Certain MOT retest items are not charged for. These are set down in law and cannot be contended.

A DIY gas tester will not be anything like accurate enough, they are designed for carb cars which have to pass 3.5% CO.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

thanks to everyones help an suggestions.what i think i will have to do is put in a new lambda and see if there is a leak on the manafold.an try an take out the air filter for the retest but the only thing is that the garage put a new air filter in should i still take it out.do yous think this would be the best things to do couse its driving me mad now lol cheers again for all your help ian

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

I don't think its the filter as the lambda is LOW indicating lean mix. If the filter was blocked it would indicate high.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

tom so do you think i should just leave the air filter alone an just fit a new lambda and then test it again ??? honestly i have not realy got a clue when it comes to cars but my mate has its him that does all the work for me iam still learning lol so what would you do tom it is was your car in trying to fix it

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

I'd go for new lambda and double check the maifold etc... A very small leak can cause big problems.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

very similar results to mine tom.

Removing the air filter and changing the oil fixed mine. Also making sure the CAT is warm is good

Guaranteed solution to your problem!

Ian, I think I should be able to solve your problem about this darn MOT test. All the expenses you will encounter should not be more than 20 pounds.

Step 1: All you have to do is get the 20 pounds and put them in the hands of the MOT tester and tell him to get on with it.
You will probably another car (that can really pass the emissions test) which the machine can take the readings from.

Thats it! :)

Step two: If step one doesnt work increase the value by 5 pounds.

Step three: If step two doesnt work then action step two again until it works.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tom can you please help me

well i think that is what i will do tom is change lambda an look for any leaks on the manafold an see how i get on from there an do you think an oil change would make any diffrence to it
