Just replaced camshaft sensor and timing belt on jtd (old sensor was damaged by a strand of timing belt jamming in the gap of the sensor and pulley). Have the crankshaft alignment tool, know how to use it, and understand the camshaft allignment marks. But can't get the crankshaft and camshaft to line up. Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated!

silly question did you line up the marks with the belt off?
have u spun the engine by hand? (two complete crank rotations?)
if you marked the belt when u fitted it then rotated the engine id be very suprised if the marks lined up again you should be looking at crank to cam relation. so when you turn the crank one complete rotation the cams should be 180* out... when the crank has been turned two complete rotations the cams should be lined up.

*taken from autodata for a JTD... setup seems to be the same for 80/115BHP throughout the years but i may stand corrected*

I can't get the marks to line up with the belt off. I know how to do it, but if I line up the camshaft marks with the belt off then turn the crankshaft , the engine jams before the wee dowel lines up with the hole on the special tool. Does that mean my engine is damaged? Im no mechanic, as you can see!

sounds to me like your cams are out in relation to the crank by 180* try turning the crank 1/4 turn this will bring the pistons down the cylinder... line the cams up then turn the crank so its lined up... if it keeps jamming then yes there is something wrong... did your belt snap or are you replacing it as a precaution/ routine maintainence

im not a diesel man myself as i have a 1.6 maybe one of the diesel boys maybe able to help further

Car broke down; camshaft and crankshaft out of synch. Strand of the original timing belt (which mechanic should have removed when he fitted the new belt, about two years ago) was jammed in small gap between cam sensor and camshaft pulley. Camshaft sensor was visibly knackered (it was bent out of shape), so I replaced it. Replacement belt is still in good condition. I will try your method for lining up camshaft and crankshaft, but I am beginning to worry that something may be seriously wrong with my engine.

if it ran before and all you have done is replaced the belt, unless you have forced something, nothing will have been damaged. it will be something silly like cam timing lol dont worry yourself too much just yet

Timing marks line up -but how do I check cam & crank alignment

Hello, my first post, and hope it lands in the right place!
Owner of a Stilo 1.9JTD Multiwagon, 2003. 68k on the clock, and replaced the original timing belt. Marked the belt in several places and had the crank & cam pulleys lined up at their timing marks. Thought I could remove the old belt by removing just the tension and idle pulleys, but had to take off the cam pulley with the belt off and with the bolt tight from new. Therefore, cam / crank were possibly out of sink. Fitted the new belt and after 2 rotations, timing marks not lining up. Started again, and with belt off, rotated both crank and cam and think they are now 'reset', but how do I check this? New belt is on, and with 2 hand rotations, the cam & crank pulley timing marks line up, but not the 'Tipex' marks I transferred from the old belt to the new belt against the corresponding marks on the crank and cam pulleys. Any help/ comments most appreciated, regards,

Richard
