Got Brava 1.6 Auto. Had to get timing belt replaced. Old one had been shredded.Garage had never seen anything like it.Had to get new tensioner too. Still got a rattling noise and concerned its still not right. Anyone elso out there with this problem?

Go back to the garage and say you are not happy with the work.

Did it actually snap?

Re: Re: Timing Belt

Back to garage NOW. Or at soonest opportunity!

Tensioner on mine failed within months of being replaced. Fixed under waranty.

I re-iterate: NOW OR SOONEST!!

Mark.

timing belt

no, it didnt actually snap but i heard a strange noise from engine. when garage opened up it was in shreds like a pile of wool!!!

Re: timing belt

My guess is whatever caused that is still there.

timing belt

think its the style of tensioner.seemingly there is a lot of 'play' when belt is running and doesnt stay in place. comes off edges of tensioner. garage was told it had been modified and looked for new part but in fact tensioner hasnt been modified. think this is a problem in the brava? has anyone come across this before? i didnt take it back to garage i bought it from (Arnold clark)as i havent been happy with the service ive recieved from them since i bought car last march.

Re: timing belt

the tensioner usually plays no part in keeping the belt central, thats the job of the crank pulley.

Re: Re: timing belt

Oh!!!! was told this was why belt was shredded. probably shouldve gone to fiat dealer but thought i would have been ripped off. was charged £80 for belt and tensioner. they did have my car for a week tho due to waiting for 'modified' part which was non-existent.

Re: Re: Re: timing belt

I've got a 1.6 and the tensioner has no sides to it, my guess is there is a bigger problem.

re timing belt

so its back to mr clark to get ripped off? again!!!!
I really wish i hadnt bought this car as there have been lots of little things going wrong. mr clark tells me its not my imagination but to bring it back in. i sit in trafic and the engine revs as though its going to blow up, my thermostat shoots through the roof while everyone around me is looking on in amazement at the racket my car is making.

Re: re timing belt

Arnold Clark are not exactly renowned for good service.

Random revving is easily solved as long as its a Mk1. (pre 99) About a 10min job.

Had to change the thermostat in my 1.6 last year as it was stuck open.

re reving

well Tom. When dianostic doesnt show up anything and they charge you £60 for that privileged knowledge im a bit loathe to take it back there. i took a 2 year warranty on the car £500. they changed the thermostat needle and told me i it wouldve cost £400 to do that outwith warranty. what a load of C***. a week after i bought the car the brakes were making a grinding noise. i took it back and they charged me £45 for telling me they had put new pads on just before i bought the car and this was them bedding in! No wonder Mr Clark is millionaire. At his customers expense!!!

Re: re reving

Just had mine back from Arnold's - went in for noise from timing belt area. They say that belt running off-centre and was rubbing on the cover!!!

New belt, idler and tensioner. What holds the belt central, aren't any of the pulleys flanged. Common arrangement is to have one flange on each pulley and they go on opposite sides of the belt.

Re: re reving

Nope, very few engines have more than 1 flanged pulley. No need if everything is correctly aligned.

similar indeed.

This sounds so similar to what happened to my marea its not true ( see earlier post from this year ) . However my little episode ended in a £998 top end rebuild ( which may well me why your engine now sounds noisy marilyn) .
I am in the middle of attempting to get FIAT to cough up something as a " good will " gesture but they are currently playing the " if it wasnt serviced at a main dealer you can f*** right off " hand . I have been checking the bottom of the bed for horses heads accordingly .

As this post seems to indicate that this issue is not as unique as my garage advised Im wondering if any other of you victims would be willing to allow me to mention your cases ( via your eamil addresses only) when i cobble together my next missive to FIAT???
thanx Dave.

marea TD100 by the way.
