Hi,

aside form my rear suspension issues (below / above / elsewhere on here), while it was in the garage, one of the guys was doing a timing belt on a C8 - which he says is the same engine (goes in the Ulyses, C8 & the JTD i gather).

Mine has 54k on a 54 plate & he said that i need to swap it without fail (he was rebuilding the C8 after a fail) as mine would go.

The Fiat recommendation if 70k i gather but also after 5 (6?) years, o i guess he's not wrong.

What's the consensus folks & bearing in mind i have a hefty bill about to come along for everything else to MOT it. Could it wait?

Thanks.

sooner rather than later, i wouldnt trust a belt more than 40k miles 3 years my self.

yours is well over the 5 years so you are running on luck anyway, get it and idlers, tensioners and water pump done asap is my advice

Hi Dave,

thanks - i thought as much & have basically made up my mind to bite the bullet & do it.

But eek - what are the "idlers, tensioners" - are they part of the same job or ano that is better / cheaper (in the long run) to do at the time?

My water pump was replaced when i first had it (2nd hand) but was done under warranty. That said, it still does need a top up now and again.

Is that a sign of something (else) horrendous in the offing and is this ano familiar / common problem with them?

With all these jobs mounting up & presumably a shed load yet to come - any consensus on when is best to off load a Multi of a certain age anyone?

In other words: what other known (but not to me) common 'issues' are due for me?

(54 plate / circa 54k miles.)

cambelt kit is £80 shop4parts
aux belt £15 "
aux pulley £25 "
water pump £25 from euro car parts
aux belt tensioner £25
antifreeze £15

then plus labour or do yourself...not a bad little job

unfortunately its just one of those things that need to be done on any car and better to be safe than sorry...
mine was 10 years old when i replaced but belt was in very bad shape!

Fiat and citroen do not have same engine
The jtd engine on multipla is a true alfa/fiat engine but jtd engine on ulysse is a psa engine, from peugeot and citroen.
Do the cambelt asap as you are running on borrowed time and do change tensioners and water pump at same time...new belt and old tensioner and old water pump is the right receipe for a disaster and really false economy...

Buypartsbuy do a complete kit of timing belt, tensioner pulley, guide pulley (both for the timing belt, not the aux one) and water pump for just under £102 inc VAT & delivery for the JTD 115 (186A8.000 engine codes). I can't find the aux belt on their website.

If you're a 'donated' member of the forum, don't forget you can get 10% off Shop4Parts prices; if you factor that in, there isn't much to choose between them price-wise.

I believe vauxhall share JTD engine in at least the safera

It's used in the Zafira, Vectra and Saab 9-5. (Badged as CDTi and TiD).

It's not used in the C8 or the other "Eurovans", despite the badges - the "JTD" engines in them are Peugeot/Citroen HDi engines.

If the idlers etc are metal, I usually wouldn't change them - but if they're plastic, I would. At the age of yours - they should be plastic, and should be changed.
