Fiat Stilo battery change

Hey can anyone advise me of any pitfalls in changing my battery ?

Re: Fiat Stilo battery change

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

There should be no problems. Radio code is stored in the body computer so you won't need to re-enter it.

Stilos are known for having electrical problem if the battery is poor so it's advisable to get the highest power and biggest battery that fits in the tray.

Hmmm, no offence but 41 Ah is not that much. I'm hoping for a minmum of 66 Ah when I change mine...

Agreed (y)

I'll be picking this up later which is what I'd call a real battery and is top choice for a JTD.

My original battery is still doing fine, even in this cold spell, which is pretty good when 7+ years old (y) but I'm heading down to the Alps and don't want to take too many chances.

The first sign that my battery was on the way out was the electric seats ramming me into the steering wheel and random PAS failure during enthusiastic cornering (Very scary as I nearly put it in a ditch once). Not had either since I put a new battery in.

7-9 years is about normal life for a car battery. depending on how it has been treated though

Re: Fiat Stilo battery change

In short - the best you can afford. So many of the systems on the Stilo are dependant on a strong and healthy battery that it's not worth compromising if you can avoid it.

But storeage capacity and voltage are two different things are they not

Although the bigger the capacity the longer it'll take to go flat.

Yes.... battery capacity and voltage are different.

All current petrol/diesel engined cars use a 12 volt lead/acid battery. However, if the car manufacturers perfect and introduce things like electric oil pumps, water pumps and A/C compressors, the battery is likely to be 24 or 42 volts.

A lead/acid battery's electrical capacity is expressed as CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) and A/h (Amps per hour).

CCA is the amount of current a battery can supply at a certain temperature for a given time before the battery goes flat. For example, a 600 CCA battery can supply 600 Amps for 30 seconds at 0°F (-17°C) before it's voltage drops to 7.5 volts.

A high CCA rating is important to enable the starter motor to turn the engine over for long enough to start the car. Particularly in cold climates.

A/h is the amount of current the battery can supply for a given time without being on charge (alternator not charging). For example, a 60 A/h battery can supply 60 Amps for 1 hour or 30 Amps for 2 hours or 15 Amps for 4 hours etc. before it goes flat.

Rated CCA and A/h performance depends on the battery being new and fully charged. As the battery ages, it's performance will reduce.

Re: Fiat Stilo battery change

you won't regret you payed a bit more for a stronger version, the Stilo is very sensible to voltage fluctuations and likes a stable voltage at load.
In winter you will also appreciate the extra power !

Hi

Please can someone confirm whether a 096 battery will definitely fit the battery box of a 1.2 before I take the plunge. Looks like its gonna be a tight squeeze if it does!!

Also, just noticed that I can't lock the car with a flat battery - not even with the key as its all electrical. :bang: And for some reason, I don't have an external lock on the passenger side, just a blanking plate. Is that the same with all Stilos?

Thanks

many thanks all good now ;0)

096 will fit. There should be a plastic locating peg or strip in the bottom of the battery box. You can move it to a different position to accomodate different size batteries. To fit a 096 battery, you need to remove the plastic part.
