throttle position sensor

Have been reading the forum for a few months - now i could do with some help/advice.'96 brava 1.4sx; had it for 18 trouble free months untill recently, when it started to have "gaps" when accelerating, particularly from low speed i.e. after turning corners/ pulling away from junctions/changing down to overtake etc. Took car to garage that I use (not Fiat!) who had a look & said that its the throttle position sensor thats faulty, but unfortunatly can't be replaced on its own-have to buy new throttle body from Fiat at a cost of £500+! As I know nothing 'bout mechanical matters,does anyone know if this is the case? Will the fault get worse,or cause damage to the car if I continue to use it as it is? any advice would be welcome, as my wallet is geting nervous! Cheers

sorry mate but it is a new throttle body by the looks of things. i have the same engine and had a quick look at the throttle body and the haynes. Try a specialist breakers, but good luck! (hope mine dnt go wrong, touch wood)

are they saying throttle body or potentiometer? I have had both and may be able to assist

Ouch! Typical Fiat.. The thermostat for a 1.6 comes as part of a BIG casting and costs £50. OK, not quite £500 but most thermostats are less than £10.

I'm sure someone can fix it, have you gone through your local bosch injection specialists in the yellow pages?

garage says its the throttle position sensor, I know that the haynes manual says something about a potentiometer,are these one and the same? The throttle body has to be replaced as a whole unit(apparantly) so I cant just replace the faulty sensor.... Hope this makes sense to you as i would really appreciate your advice, cheers, robp

good thought! will give it a go but am not sure if its a Bosch part or Fiat part thats at fault.
