Hey all

Not really posted much in here in a while, but after today, need some thoughts on the matter at hand, although I think I already know the answer.

Dynamic's timing belt either failed or slipped this morning while being driven to work (Mother had use of the car at the time) even though we had the timing belt done 3 years ago at 50k miles and we are now at 76k miles.

Honestly, after the incident with the Brava 3 years ago, it seems we cant escape these issues! (3 years prior to that my old Rover had the same issue, after a prior timing belt job!)

Davren's got a point though. If you got all three cars' cambelts done at the same garage then surely alarm bells would ring.

Particularly as Stilos don't usually snap or slip their original cambelts at 76k, let alone a replacement one.

Which engine is your Stilo? Ie is it one that has a waterpump driven by the cambelt? If so it could be that the waterpump has a fault.

Considering we dont know if its a belt snap or something else thats seized, lets not go on the blame game yet.

You said the belt had either failed or slipped.

A good garage would always suggest replacing all the tensioners, and the water pump if driven by the timing belt, when replacing the belt.

Of course, many owners will say "no.. just do the belt" then complain when it fails or slips.

Liam, The Stilo is the 1.6 that we have, I dont know if thats the type that drives the waterpump with its cambelt though.

Okay, to fill in a bit, the three cars were done in different places, The Rover was done at the local rover dealer at their insistance when the waterpump failed (but no insistance on tensioners or pullies).
The Brava, I guess the blame is with me there, It failed at 5 years 6 months (52k miles) so I did go over the time frame.

The Stilo was done by a local garage that has usually done us okay.

I did say it either snapped or slipped as its not confirmed yet, when it is then (if someone wishes to) blame can be applied.

Anyhow, this really wasnt a thread to moan about garages.
Have to move forward so if anyone has anything to suggest, lets see what options there are going for a running car again.

Sounds like bad luck with all three cars - certainly 52k & 5 years on the Brava wasn't really pushing it.

As for the Stilo, i don't really know how it could be got back on the road, but id guess once the fault is found then people will be able to help more. The 1.6 waterpump isn't driven by the cambelt as far as i know, so that rules out any fault on the waterpumps part.

Assuming there's no piston damage then the bill will be around £800 plus for valves, gaskets, new cambelts and tensioners etc. You won't know how much damage has been caused until you take the head off which involves most of the work. Don't know whether that's good or bad news:confused:

Cheers guys.
Not sure if its either good or bad news deckchairs. I think we are allowing £800 for repairing the car, but anything way more then that then we may consider it a loss and move onto a new car sooner then planned, But thats a decision for Monday or Tuesday when we should get the feedback on what amount of damage there is.
