The ugliest cars...?

Not to go too in depth, but I would definitely rock out a Nissan Cube should I be required to get a family car....

The simple answer to this question is the Austin Princess,

But there are many lower levels of unglyness such as the Ford Scorpio (what were they thinking), the Vauxhall Senator (having a V6 did not even make it any cooler). one of those Ssang Yong 4x4 things (just what), the Chrystler Neon (fast but horrid) and the Toyota Pruis.

Then there's the obvious list of cool because they're ugly cars like the Rover SD1 (my favourite), the Austin Montego (the front headrests are fantastic), the Vauxhall Belmont (an astra with a bolted-on ugly bit) the Jaguar XJS (looks like a collective of 70s car bits) and the Ford Orion (doesn't like too bad if you turn around and shut your eyes).

Certainly very low on the beauty scale... -- the yellow ones (with the brown vinyl roof) looked like wedges of cheese....

The Scorpio estate was ever so capacious, though...! Nearly bought one (in black... -- looked like a hearse...): until I discovered more acres of rust underneath than a classic Panda will ever have.... :p

I have to disagree with the Senator. The B version, with the 24v three-litre, was one of the best stealth cars I ever drove. A friend of the family -- who was in charge of a fire-station, several miles away -- had the four-litre (Irmscher?) version. Put a flashing blue light on the top of that, and you soon earned respect!

A little ugly, perhaps; but very high on the legendary Cool Wall (IMHO). :D

The Senator will always have a special place in my heart, but more for the back seat shenanigans with my milf college tutor back in the day. V6 was fast too, but I only experienced it as a passenger because I couldn't drive back then. Shame really

I think you've missed the mark here. Just because something isn't pretty doesn't mean its ugly the orion, belmont, Senator, neon and prius, they're not really ugly they're just boring in terms of styling

The SD1 was quite a good looking car for its era and the XJS is only let down by replacing the stunning E-type individually its still a nice looking car.

the biggest problem with your post is that you state that the Montego is cool!! I mean really!! where were you in the 80's there is and never has been anything cool or good about a montego, they're not even bad enough looking to call ugly they like the orion and belmont are just bland dull and uninteresting

another seriously ugly car is the Lagonda estate

if you search for this car all you get is links to 'ugliest car' type websites and posts

Well this just proves that it's simply upto personal opinion doesn't it - I love all 80s cars even the ugly ones, I have owned alot of them as bangers too so I've made my own deductions through experience really. Obviously cars like the Lagonda are terrible to look at but I like throwing the cat amongst the pigeons with the cars that we maybe drove and saw every day, ones you wouldn't have thought of, maybe you think I'm wrong but it's just my viewpoint :). Have you searched the words "Ugly cars UK" into google?

Ugly? I worked for an Opel dealer in the late '70s and the Senator A had a feel of real quality and solidity. In fact it made the 7-Series BMW of the time look a little insubstantial and in appearance seemed to be more of a match for the upper end of the E-Class and bottom tier of S-Class territory. With a little smoothing off at the front and rear it looked better. But, when I saw its replacement, the Senator B, I thought it was, by a long way the best looking large car in Europe.

I really despise insurance companies who do 'fun' articles such as this, they just repeat the same old stories as has been mentioned a thousand times before, must take all of 2 minutes to write the piece. Just to get more people on to their website, and so use them.

The Ka was only ugly when it was sold only with the black bumpers, colour coding them made it a reasonable looking car. As shown by their own picture! :bang:

Yes the multipla is ugly, but it's shape is down to function, which was something it was very good at.

The juke/cashcow, actually in fact all nissans are ugly.

Pontiac Aztek isn't really that bad, it's quite bland, but the designers tried to rectify that by moving the lights about...

Daimler SP250 has got to be one of the ugliest cars i can think of at the moment, Would love to drive one, but the outside is horrible! I can think of many cars that are ugly and bland such as late model escorts and cortinas, but just ugly is proving elusive at the moment.

I quite like the Dart, too -- and I'm not usually a fan of American chrome... -- but no BMW has done anything for me since the 2002.... :p
When I have one of my fairly regular "10 cars I'd have in my garage if/when I win the lottery" moments, one of the 2002's big brothers regularly sneaks in there. The 2500/2800/3.0S/3.0Si:

Er, might have overdone it this time.

Edit: Phew, not quite as bad as I thought.

Thinking about the Multipla though, one of my colleagues bought one second hand with about 90K on the clock and scrapped it with 170 showing after being hit by a

"Oh yes, it was definitely a BMW....what kind? I think it was a blue one.....yes definitely a blue one.....Registration number? No sorry."

in a supermarket carpark. He used to put a massage table in it and has since struggled to find a suitable replacement. The Scenic he then bought was rubbish and developed a fault in the digital dashboard which cost about £900 to fix.

But if you do think about the Multipla, at the front, the idea of putting the main beam headlights high up was genius. The higher they are, ther greater the range of the lights. Dashboards are intrinsically boring, the Multipla is one of the very few with an interesting dash. 3 abreast seating? I was talking to a chap at the National Cycling Centre in Mancland a few months ago who was hanging on to his facelift version for grim death as he could get him, his two teenage sons and 3 bikes plus camping gear in the back. Have you ever looked at that rear screen? I can't imagine anybody but the Italians styling one as complex as that.

You mention the SP250 which, coincidentally, was also known as the Dart, and yes, it was ugly, but it's so individual, it becomes almost handsome the more you see it. Plus, the concept of putting a 2.5 V8 into a small convertible was pretty brave, almost as brave as the styling in fact

A long time ago, in a town far away (well, not that far away actually) a school friend of mine worked in the bodyshop of a Chrysler dealer in Stockport, the company still exists, selling Peugeots, someone had the idea that motor sport would be good for the company's image.

I have no idea what the process was that led them to their choice of racing, and am certain that corporate sensibilities wouldn't allow them to do it today. But, nonetheless, the decision was taken to enter the high brow (I use the term advisedly) world of Banger Racing. There was a conveniently placed track at High Edge Raceway near Buxton, no shortage of blokes ready and willing to drive or work on their chosen steed and the only tasks left were to choose a car and then prepare it.

They bought a car, painted in Chrysler corporate blue and white, and put a remote fuel tank in the rear window. The back seat came out as did the front passenger seat. It looked magnificent.

The car?

If you know anything about Banger Racing you'll know the first race was a little like putting a Poodle into a cage full of Pit Bull Terriers.
