Well we have had a mains unit in the house for years never had an issue (Boiler serviced at interval same for gas fire,,,,.......

saw these in Asda

http://direct.asda.com/Lifesaver-Carbon-Monoxide-Alarm/001136302,default,pd.html

so for £8 i got one and stuck it in the door way between the 2 sides of our double garage since i have a calor heater in there and the like cant be too careful....

had my dads car running with the door open behind it 10 mins later this magic little box starts making a right song and dance.... given it only goes off at harmful / dangerous levels gave me the heads up to turn it off and get some fresh air... ...... just goes to show you cant smell CO some might find it a good little investment. for the house and or garage ........ When I moved into my last house I started sorting out the loft space, strengthening the joists etc.
I was up there for hours over the course of several days.
Eventually I got as far as the combi boiler flu pipe, it had a great big gap at a join.

I was sick as a pig for the next few days, we were all feeling poorly.

I have had a detector since and I give them as presents to those I know have not got them. (I fit it when giving it.)
