Seicento The New Uno Turbo 1.4 Seicento :D

Introduction

Well thanks for reading so far... haha...

As a few of you may know, I've had and done a good few seicento conversions in the past and was intending to do my mk2 c20xe (Vauxhall 2ltr) but this time around converting it to turbo (low boost).... Anyhow... As with most things in life, circumstances changed and buying a house took over, so this project sadly seen the bin!

The house took up a massive part of the year, as it needed fully renovating to bring it up to scratch, including rewiring, plastering new kitchen and so fourth... Due to me being self employed as an electrician/plumber, I ended up taking 3 months off work and doing the lot myself....

3 months later it went from this....

We got the keys originally in January this year, and now things have changed yet again as we have just accepted an offer on the house, and currently going through the sale process for it lol!!

However it now means the house we have put an offer on is much newer, requires hardly any work and the best bit.... I finally have a GARAGE :D This is a first for me as im usually found outside in the rain and snow working on my cars....

So now you know why I have been soo quiet, and why my last project was thrown to one side!!

Anyhow, onto the car!! Ive been secretly waiting for my old 1.4 seicento turbo to come back online for sale, always joking that if it did then I would buy it to strip into parts as it had a fortune 'apparently' spent on it (think upwards of 18k)....

Very recently, I had a text off todger, with an ebay item number :p Thinking nothing of it i searched the number, and to my surprise the 1.4 seicento was on there for sale haha!! I rang todger and talked through whether or not it would be worthwhile to buy back, and we ended up making an offer to the guy for £650....

As the car had a gearbox problem (solidly stuck in gear), it needed to be trailered upto me from Kent to Warwickshire for the grand sum of £135....

Anyhow, it arrived, and to be fair I had forgot how bad it looked.... what an eyesore..

1429.jpg

As much as it looked bad when I owned it the last time, it has got progressively worse!... Its well known on the forum as a bit of a sl*g car due to the amount of owners it has had in its life....

It was apparently built by Wardy25 and his friend, with wardy paying for most of the work. From what I gather, there was a dispute of some sort between the two, and the car was never fully finished.. As you can see it wasn't mint, but it never used to look quite so bad...

1524.jpg

No idea how its got into the state that its in now lol, but its time for me to change that!!

The original car is way too gone to save, and to be fair as I point out later, the engine conversion itself hasn't originally been carried out too great... Such things as the main engine mount being welded to the thin bay metalwork, and not to anything structural resulting in the mount passing through the bodywork... How was this repaired?... with the aid of exhaust rubbers mashed in-between the body and engine supporting it in place lol.

Ive started stripping the car down.... and NOT to my surprise I've found loads of reasons why this car has never actually ran properly lol..

The engine bay... Upon inspection at this point, things just look messy, but nothing screams out at you...

1625.jpg

Then its time to uncover the electrics... (ignoring that the badly positioned stainless boost pipe work is arching out on the broken HT leads)..

All this lot was hidden in a plastic box in the engine bay....

1719.jpg

There are exposed connections all over the place in the engine loom, for example the coil... Soldiered, practically all pins touching...

1818.jpg

Relays

1914.jpg

Dizzy slam panel mod... (as you can see the boost pipe runs across the HT leads, and with the friction it has worn through two leads creating obvious problems).

2013.jpg

And then onto my favourite... The engine mounts....

With this beauty, it seems to have been welded to a single skin part of the car which has no under support as far as I can tell... The mount looks to have given way (well at least ripped the metal work apart)... and then fixed with perished exhaust rubbers... Im guessing by the look of the half width cambelt, the engine has dropped while running...

2231.jpg

2316.jpg

We then have this other 'custom' mount on the gearbox side.... (there is one to the rear, but I haven't got a pic yet... I will however as that's a beauty too)...

2414.jpg

Other than the fact the wirings bad, the mounts are awful, its an eyesore, and the car is stuck in gear.. I think ive got a bargain... *rolls eyes*

The car is currently in this state, and im removing the salvageable parts off, to reclaim some money back and then put towards the rebuild & reshell...

2515.jpg

I'm intending to...

*Fully strip the engine and rebuild
*Buy a replacement gearbox, or recondition the one I have
*Re-shell into a better donor car
*Run the engine on Megasquirt
*Fit Coilovers to the new shell
*Install Full Poly Bush Kit
*UT Brake Upgrade
*Re design the engine mounts!!

I think the above is going to work out a fair bit, however I have openly admitted this car had a lot of problems in the past, so I am hoping to resolve these in the next shell to make it a more drivable car rather than something that's only good In a straight line.

The engine is due a rebuild (and apparently was in 2008), although after seeing how bad its been put together (wondering where the 18k was spent), I sadly don't believe a thing about the car and will be starting again from scratch!!!

The house move is due around November time, so I will be carrying out the bulk of the conversion then, although little bits will be done between now and then :p

Powerflex's new sell is that all the crush tubes are stainless. The logic is sound enough -- if the surface that bears on the polybush gets rusty, you'd expect it to abrade it to bits.

Lithium or silicone or copper grease will help, but only for as long as it stays in there.

Unfortunately the prothane ones for the MR2 are mild steel, too, and there are a lot of them. Desperately need to replace the ones on the tie bars -- lift off hard in a straight line and you can feel the rear toe change: lift off in a corner and it will bite hard. :(

The Strongflex inserts blistered and the rust started to bond to the poly bush so needed a good bashing to get out. The things are too big for the rear arms and get squashed, I needed a jack to get the arms to go on. The inner ARB bushes are a pain too.
IMHO, they are ok for track days but not everyday road use.

I fitted Powerflex to my other Seicento about 2 years ago and no squeaks yet. The material seems to be of a self lubricating type.

Well the joys of pattern parts......

The nightmare clutch cable turned out to be made and quality controlled by a cross-eyed monkey, giving no end of problems..

It was fitted only to find that one of the bolts was practically impossible to bolt up due to the cable design... And once installed and tested, the cable was rubbing against the cars inner metalwork...

A quick phone call to the supplier and they ordered me in 3 others to choose from...

Sorted now thank god... Although I seem to have a strange score of wheel missing, with no clues as to what's catching it :S

00655.JPG

While I had all the tools out, I thought I would remove my chopped coilover springs, and replace with the -40mm APEX springs...

The car, again looks to be on stilts :(

00840.JPG

The only other bits ive been doing is in the way of audio... Ive replaced my Kenwood 4" front speakers with some EDGE ones (£15 from Halfords).... And they sound MUCH better (think their rebranded old stock vibe, as all the freq & spec are the same)...

And started on the rear panels to house a pair of edge 6x9s (£24.99 down from £44.99)....

I usually go with decent branded products, however this car wont really be an audio beasty once I get the annoying exhaust drone and turbo noise to listen to :p

The rear cards...

18mm MDF rings made, and glue gunned to the panels

02120.JPG

Panels removed ready to stretch an old T-shirt over & resin

02222.JPG

Resin covered panel... Awaiting this to dry so I can start layering a few layers of fibreglass matting.

02516.JPG

The only other part im doing as some of you may have noticed, is a gauge pod (for where the heater vents are)... Im not 100% sure if im using this just yet... However while I had the resin out I thought it would be silly not to finish off...

Ive attacked it quite a bit with a grinder to remove some of the standard fiat shaping to the plastic (so it doesn't stick as much forward each side)...

02418.JPG

02316.JPG

A layer of fabric & resin has been added, thus giving me the next option as to whether im skimming in real carbon fibre, or smoothing up for paint... Not entirely sure just yet

I bet the passenger side front wheel is rubbing against the gearbox.

One wot I done earlier, for a Cinq. Needs flocking. One day I'll get a 3D printer -- it was a real SOB to do and isn't quite right.

The wheel was on the drivers side, although it could have originally been on the gearbox side and the last owner swapped it over?

Like that pod you've made, looks quite professional! I have to agree this one is a SOB to make as there's not much plastic to work with once the holes are cut out...

Could be, or just maybe a track rod end scraping? Things can get aweful tight in there.

I really should take another look to be honest.... Ive managed to stumble on some cheap 14" alloys that are not abarths... The only problem now is I think I need to pick up a wheel arch roller haha....

Found one on ebay for £76ish, but looking for cheaper as I only need it for two arches!!(although guess I could rent it out and get my money back)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300956177...&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=54

The wheels are a staggered fit, and the lad who's selling them has no idea how to measure as he claims their 8-9" rears, and 7-8" fronts...

However hes spaced the rears out to fit a VW polo, so something's not right lol!

025.PNG

For the money, they were worth a gamble...

Thought id crack on with carbon wrapping my gauge pod... Just to see how it turns out...

Once the resin on the T-shirt had dried, I had this...

00180.JPG

Holes re-cut out....

00284.JPG

00656.JPG

And on with the carbon... This was glue gunned from the rear (to allow me to stretch the carbon slightly around the curvature)... I normally would have put a layer of resin on 1st and stuck the carbon down, however this stuff is 'carbonmodz' pre impregnated stuff, so I didn't have to :D

00748.JPG

00841.JPG

I then left it over night ready to tidy up and wet sand today...

I thought I would give it a trial fit before a second resin coat, to check it still fits haha...

01618.JPG

01530.JPG

With it fitting nearly perfectly, it was time to give it another thick resin coat... This will be left until tomorrow to cure before I fully wet sand to a smooth finish.. Il then be leaving it a week to vent any vapour before clear coating and deciding whether or not im actually going to use it lol.

02223.JPG

After the trial fit, im thinking I should spray the silver heater facia a gloss black (have some ford panther black somewhere)....

I do have an abarth fake carbon fibre printed one in the yellow seicento, however it will look really bad next to real carbon fibre haha

I love them wheels .. :)

and your problem will be with the rubbing wheel is , I bet your arb is on the bottom of the wishbones and when its on load the arb touches the wheel (Y) ive had this once

Think it might be that to be honest... Ive noticed a collection of alloy wheel dust building up on the bottom arm, so need to inspect a bit more me thinks... Should have the wheels off tomorrow postman depending... as awaiting my arch roller/puller haha :D

Well... Pics as promised, although nothing exciting...

Rear builds...

00285.JPG

Fitted..

00462.JPG

Amp install.. Under the seat out the way... Started with some 18mm ply under the carpet..

00555.JPG

Slits cut into the carpet to pass the wires... (keeps it all tidy..)

00658.JPG

Installed & screwed down tight... (also taken the time to hoover the carpet)

00750.JPG

00842.JPG

Tucked neatly under the seat... Plenty of clearance

01146.JPG

Then off to collect these from Chris... Well his parents house as he's down under.... Not dead, but Australia.. I'm still yet to donate any monies for these, however will do!!

¡ʎǝʇɐɯ sʇunoɯ ǝuıƃuǝ ǝɥʇ ɹoɟ sʞuɐɥʇ

Written upside down for his benefit... :D

Not sure if il use these to be honest as I currently have no idea what im working with until the uno engine comes out....

01241.JPG

I then got busy building my jimstim....

It went from this...

01432.JPG

To this...

01816.JPG

And then finally these arrived...

0468.JPG

To reveal these...

0487.JPG

The rears are 8j... and im awaiting an arch roller to attack the seicento :p Fingers crossed it should be here tomorrow....

Il get my heatgun and a coffee ready!!

Ah, so someone hasn't been reading his PMs!

Nice wheels, though. Are you going to do the reverse stagger to get better front grip/reduce understeer?

Ohh I haven't got a PM, only from chris and something to do with a fiat event coming up...

The reverse stagger would be a good idea, and probably a sensible option, however im more a looks over practicality idiot, so their going on the rear haha! Although after the test fit today, I think I would have serious steering issues with them on the front, as their a bugger on the rear!

Well, looks as if my megasquirt is finally completed...

I haven't fitted any extras other than a PWM Idle control valve (so I can run a Vauxhall ICV rather than the rare as hell uno turbo one) and then installed two BIP373 ignition drivers for me to run my coil directly, rather than use a ford edis set up.

I basically want to get the engine up and running reliably, before deciding whether to add any extras like launch control, anti lag etc...

This beasty arrived the other day.... and today I put it to the test around todgers...

02317.JPG

02613.JPG

We tried to heat up the panel while rolling, but realistically the paint was going to crack, as I ended up flaring the arches about 1/2 inch... The bodywork paint is fine, its only the paint on the lip, which is temporarily covered now in red hammerite, until I have the time to seam seal...

The lip is completely folded onto itself, with the archwork being pulled out a fair bit...

03216.JPG

The rear wheels, are in fairness a bit wide for the standard arches, 8j with stretched 195/45/14 rubber on...

However I do think they look cool!! The rears will need a 5mm spacer, as at the moment they are touching the rear arms.... The fronts I will be spacing also with the abarth spacers once I get time to remove them from the yellow donor...

Test fit (note todger sat in the boot, while the rear arm was jacked up to give an idea of clearance once ive adapted the springs haha)

Im ideally trying to find a spare pair of these spring adjusting cups, as I think they should fit the seicento with a small adaption (nut, bolt & drill)... Originally from a VW lupo.... If I can source a cheap set of these it will let me reuse my other springs, and then adjust the height of the rear to the required height, thus meaning no more angle grinder & spring mistakes lol...

52719_x300.jpg

Fingers crossed.

Ohh I haven't got a PM, only from chris and something to do with a fiat event coming up...

Was sure I'd sent you one offering my arch masher, but can't find it in the out box, so I must have pressed the wrong button.

It's coming along at your usual frantic pace!

If you can sort out the reverse stagger it might mean you can do without a rear ARB (which is probably harder to do). [Health and Safety warning: do not try reverse stagger on RWD cars!]

haha, I take it you know from experience???

Cheers, no worries on the masher... I will no doubt be rolling every car and van I now own to get my moneys worth lol!

Well, attack of the arch roller part #2

The fronts...

um_com_022.JPG

After a long hard debate, I then had the great idea of looking online for different wheels.... I still have a thing for the mini wheels (the ones with the better offset)... and now ive got rolled arches, I think they may be the route I want to go... As it seems pointless in going to the effort of sourcing uno turbo brakes, only to put big wheels on :p

anyhow, a picture was taken, and then a few posts made on the VW forums...

um_com_024.JPG

If anyone has some mini wheels, or abarths, give me a shout.... :p

Oh and as a spur of the moment idea... I also booked my MOT for tomorrow (a month or so early)....

Can you guess what doesn't work on my sei?
