Seicento The New Uno Turbo 1.4 Seicento :D

Introduction

Well thanks for reading so far... haha...

As a few of you may know, I've had and done a good few seicento conversions in the past and was intending to do my mk2 c20xe (Vauxhall 2ltr) but this time around converting it to turbo (low boost).... Anyhow... As with most things in life, circumstances changed and buying a house took over, so this project sadly seen the bin!

The house took up a massive part of the year, as it needed fully renovating to bring it up to scratch, including rewiring, plastering new kitchen and so fourth... Due to me being self employed as an electrician/plumber, I ended up taking 3 months off work and doing the lot myself....

3 months later it went from this....

We got the keys originally in January this year, and now things have changed yet again as we have just accepted an offer on the house, and currently going through the sale process for it lol!!

However it now means the house we have put an offer on is much newer, requires hardly any work and the best bit.... I finally have a GARAGE :D This is a first for me as im usually found outside in the rain and snow working on my cars....

So now you know why I have been soo quiet, and why my last project was thrown to one side!!

Anyhow, onto the car!! Ive been secretly waiting for my old 1.4 seicento turbo to come back online for sale, always joking that if it did then I would buy it to strip into parts as it had a fortune 'apparently' spent on it (think upwards of 18k)....

Very recently, I had a text off todger, with an ebay item number :p Thinking nothing of it i searched the number, and to my surprise the 1.4 seicento was on there for sale haha!! I rang todger and talked through whether or not it would be worthwhile to buy back, and we ended up making an offer to the guy for £650....

As the car had a gearbox problem (solidly stuck in gear), it needed to be trailered upto me from Kent to Warwickshire for the grand sum of £135....

Anyhow, it arrived, and to be fair I had forgot how bad it looked.... what an eyesore..

1429.jpg

As much as it looked bad when I owned it the last time, it has got progressively worse!... Its well known on the forum as a bit of a sl*g car due to the amount of owners it has had in its life....

It was apparently built by Wardy25 and his friend, with wardy paying for most of the work. From what I gather, there was a dispute of some sort between the two, and the car was never fully finished.. As you can see it wasn't mint, but it never used to look quite so bad...

1524.jpg

No idea how its got into the state that its in now lol, but its time for me to change that!!

The original car is way too gone to save, and to be fair as I point out later, the engine conversion itself hasn't originally been carried out too great... Such things as the main engine mount being welded to the thin bay metalwork, and not to anything structural resulting in the mount passing through the bodywork... How was this repaired?... with the aid of exhaust rubbers mashed in-between the body and engine supporting it in place lol.

Ive started stripping the car down.... and NOT to my surprise I've found loads of reasons why this car has never actually ran properly lol..

The engine bay... Upon inspection at this point, things just look messy, but nothing screams out at you...

1625.jpg

Then its time to uncover the electrics... (ignoring that the badly positioned stainless boost pipe work is arching out on the broken HT leads)..

All this lot was hidden in a plastic box in the engine bay....

1719.jpg

There are exposed connections all over the place in the engine loom, for example the coil... Soldiered, practically all pins touching...

1818.jpg

Relays

1914.jpg

Dizzy slam panel mod... (as you can see the boost pipe runs across the HT leads, and with the friction it has worn through two leads creating obvious problems).

2013.jpg

And then onto my favourite... The engine mounts....

With this beauty, it seems to have been welded to a single skin part of the car which has no under support as far as I can tell... The mount looks to have given way (well at least ripped the metal work apart)... and then fixed with perished exhaust rubbers... Im guessing by the look of the half width cambelt, the engine has dropped while running...

2316.jpg

We then have this other 'custom' mount on the gearbox side.... (there is one to the rear, but I haven't got a pic yet... I will however as that's a beauty too)...

2414.jpg

Other than the fact the wirings bad, the mounts are awful, its an eyesore, and the car is stuck in gear.. I think ive got a bargain... *rolls eyes*

The car is currently in this state, and im removing the salvageable parts off, to reclaim some money back and then put towards the rebuild & reshell...

2515.jpg

I'm intending to...

*Fully strip the engine and rebuild
*Buy a replacement gearbox, or recondition the one I have
*Re-shell into a better donor car
*Run the engine on Megasquirt
*Fit Coilovers to the new shell
*Install Full Poly Bush Kit
*UT Brake Upgrade
*Re design the engine mounts!!

I think the above is going to work out a fair bit, however I have openly admitted this car had a lot of problems in the past, so I am hoping to resolve these in the next shell to make it a more drivable car rather than something that's only good In a straight line.

The engine is due a rebuild (and apparently was in 2008), although after seeing how bad its been put together (wondering where the 18k was spent), I sadly don't believe a thing about the car and will be starting again from scratch!!!

The house move is due around November time, so I will be carrying out the bulk of the conversion then, although little bits will be done between now and then :p

If I remember (frantic day tomorrow! -- garage furniture to buy and move and Marushka -- aged 9 -- wants a tour of the new garage) I'll get the tape and (etc) out tomorrow and measure one. I suspect it'll fit.

There's someone selling one for £20 on the MR2 Owner's Club forum.

But I'm no dab hand with them -- still at the stage where every job takes 3 times longer than it should!

simply, wow... i always knew that sei would be pretty scary if you looked at it closely but thats takes the biscuit that does, its miles worse than i expected lol..

RE intercooler, Renault 5GTT have them with in/out at same end, and you can get upgraded deeper ones and all that jazz, might be worth a look into.. Although sounds like a fun afternoon in the scrap yard searching for an appropriate size and shaped IC

PS> I think you should get the old plate on the donor car, a nod to the things chequered past.

Sounds good matey, if that's the case il document how I get it all in (ie mounts etc) in a lot more detail with measurements and such like... (a mini guide to how ive done it lol)...

The conversion would be a good conversion if done right... A lot of people tend to say its a heavy engine in the seicento, but forget that the original UT only weighed in at 711–910 kg (curb weight) depending on specification, so its not that bad!

I think this car was a bad example though haha, as ive since found out the 'lowered suspension' is actually chopped lowering springs sat on bump stops, so would never handle around corners anyway!

please do, as many pics as poss please.
i think the seicento will fly with the uno turbo engine plus my uno turbo has been super reliable so i recon would make a great daily drive.
people forget how great these engine were plus you can run them on punto gt management which is what i'm planing on my uno turbo & possibly on my sei abarth.

Yea no worries rushing, im sourcing parts for the next month or two anyway :)

& thanks :)

Time too buy my TIG (and ARC) and/or gas MIG off me mate :p

Looking good. I'll have to swing buy and have a ganders soon. You dumping it a Jamie's or ur new place?

Its at mine, your welcome to take a nose although the swaps being done at the new place as were nearly at the completion dates with the house...

I did ask Jamie about your welder before I bought mine, but he wouldn't give me an answer on it so I ended up buying a new 230t Clarke mig. I think he probably wants it and was putting me off the scent lol!

I asked him to ask you when you were leaving as I wanted to pay you to look at the MS when it was all installed, but he said your literally about to leave :(

As far as im aware MS is not something I can just mash with a grinder haha

Dude I have an MR2 intercool !!! Postage and you can have it :). (It's such a waste to bin it after i brought it lol)

People use in on the cappo, which i no longer have !

Ming

OOh that would be awesome! I think it should fit, just wasn't 100% which is why I asked fingers hehe

Great to see you getting stuck in a project like this again.

I wonder what became of my old car

I'm not yours to sell!!

Aww cheers... This one will be seen through to the end... well at least until attaching MS to my laptop haha. Think that's where the swearing will start!

Yea no probs will do that for you.. Think my fall back plan on my MS will be the punto GT stuff... Ive got the full uno management, but needs a loom as I just cut everything as it was scrap.. However its a tad on the old side now me thinks, especially with this as my planned daily (bar my work van)...

I won't be back in Glasgow till 19th Sep. So i can send you some pictures ? It's not great but is useable :).

Got most of the pipes that comes with it.

Could you wait that long lol?

Ming

Yea that's fine, im not in any rush as im away for two weeks from the 2nd of sept :D

I fly out on 22nd Sep...never to return! :D I haven't left yet hehe.

Yep, kind build a MS with a grinder, but I'm off all September so if you need someone to cast an eye over it, drop me a msg :)

Haha, super jealous! To be honest ive not even received the bloody thing in the post yet, it was ordered ages ago, but been stuck in uk customs for 4 days so far :( Wish they would just send me the bill already!

A minor update....

I've taken delivery of my new 'garage' laptop... Ebay Toughbook for £50 complete with serial connection and windows XP, so perfect for OBD2/vagcom and MS programs (vag for the van)...

I've also taken receipt of a TPS from a newer Vauxhall c20let engine, which looks like it should be a close enough fit for the uno turbo inlet, giving me a resistance rather than on/off for the MS (thanks Kritip)

I've also collected my new Sei :D:D:D and found out why the owner sold it lol... thanks to a MOTHERFO of an oil leak :( (it was clean underneath when we viewed, and not so clean when I got home). I just need to work out where its coming from as its engine oil, and was all over the sump (which looks new-ish) and more worryingly the flywheel cover near the clutch (fingers crossed the crank seal hasn't gave way)

I don't suppose anyone has had a similar leak in this place? (was thinking that the sump may not be fitted properly on the oval cut out this side... cant think of anything else 'oily' nearby)

Its been cleaned up so I can leave overnight and look tomorrow

Other than that, its nippy, quiet and has somehow adopted moon buggy suspension....

Im desperate for some abarth wheels to tidy it up!!

Its now parked next to its donor :p

Looking forward until Thursday as that's when the coil overs are due for delivery, and as im not expecting to drive anywhere off-road, il be replacing the 4x4 suspension over the weekend :D

Just need to search the forum about this damn leak now haha...

If it's near the flywheel cover, I'd take consideration that the GB is leaking, and someone has put non-GB oil in there....they will typically run fine with the right grade!!!!! No that many folk know.

Could also be a load of other sources. De-gunk it and then look for the oil :D

Not a very revealing photo, but access is difficult. Dimensions are approx 10" x 12". Ming can, I'm sure, offer better ones if he's got one out of a car! (Just noticed -- it's upside down!)

Note the fan! Due to the sub optimal placement of the intercooler, Toyota put a fan on, switched to come on when the under bonnet temperature reaches a (very) high figure. One mod is to shroud a 9 or 10 inch fan on instead -- the shrouding helps the fan be more effective.

Seeing the previous pic, I'd planned to put the oil cooler exactly where you want to put it, and duct it to the wheelarch.

That's a possibility. The proviso with using engine oil in the gearbox is you have to change it very frequently -- the gears will just sheer it to bits, effectively lowering the rating of the oil by destroying the viscosity improvers.

We always used to run the old bevel drive Ducatis on straight 40 or 50 for this very reason (still needed frequent oil changes due to no oil filters and petrol contamination of the oil).

Haha il clean it all up tomorrow and inspect for leaks... From what ive gathered on this forum it literally can be from anywhere, so will be checking the usual places (ie cam cover etc)

This is great, appreciate it as I think it will be perfect for the job :D

oh, u on about the leak on the red one? why do you care? You selling selling the block?

The oil leak is on the red one near the gearbox (and over the sump), im only bothered as im now using it as the main mode of transport. I don't like the thought of leaving a trace everywhere I've been.. (plus its quite bad by the looks of it)...

The uno gearbox on the yellow one I haven't even bothered looking with... I removed the gear cables on that, and manually tried to change gear using the selectors on the box, however no joy... The selectors move and its still stuck firm in gear... Ive looked into getting it reconditioned, but been quoted £500 + any broken parts (so basically just new seals, bearings and gaskets)...

I'm planning on binning that gearbox, and using the Punto GT one as its relatively the same, just has the hydro clutch on it, which looks to be easily swapped back to cable clutch fork (saves messing with clutch pedals etc) The bonus being I can pick these up much easier for around £80-100...

Also the GT box has a closer ratio between 2-5th apparently :D

super post this, great looking house stuff and the cars are great that yellow thing is in a shocking state.Red one is great.looking forward to more on this.cheers dude, Stu
