The money saving thread

I thought it might be good to start a thread where we can share ideas about how we saved money or got good deals ... Does anyone have any money saving ideas?:)

We have all the major & minor league supermarkets within a few miles as makes no difference in travel terms. We take the opportunity of special offers as they arise. Check `the end’ fixtures (the turning points of each aisle) for the current offers. This week I recall Persil 4.25kg(50wash) is £6 at Tesco in contrast to £12 at Sainsbury or Waitrose. The `saving’ goes to the nearest Ember Inn (2 meals for £6.50 before 5pm) or Marston’s Tavern (Two-for-One).

Or get Aldi's own brand stuff as it's only about £2.99 and works just as well :)

EvoStevo mentioned Freecycle in this thread:

As well as Gumtree, in the UK there is Freegle, else worldwide there is Freecycle where you can do similar things.
Offer trees etc for people with woodburners (but not fences coated with preservatives please), get people to come and take away your old telly, wardrobe, sofa, anything.

Likewise if your after something yourself you can ask on those groups.

For instance I wanted an old water cistern, got one straight away from someone that had one in the shed. I have seen cars, caravans, conservatories and most everything else given away.

Very useful if you want to have a spring clearout, you only have to give away your old stuff and someone will come and take it away. Saves all the hassle of ebay and trips to the dump.

Has anyone used Freecycle?

I have real issues with free cycle/feegle.

Used to be run through ridiculously heavy handed mods on yahoo groups who wouldn't let you put your pictures in the ads because the short piece of HTML 'might be a virus'
To begin with people would give and take, then low life's started turning up asking for scrap metal on a daily basis and coming up with elaborate sob stories to secure saleable items, these days it's all rubbish or wanted ads it's really lost the community spirit.

That's why I much prefer gumtree I would rather pay a few pounds for an honest price to an honest seller, and sell my stuff to someone who actually wants it or will benefit rather than someone out to make a quick buck.

One of our mods had a slight problem last week...
"unfortunately i was let down in a very very big way today.

I responded to an email for a sofa suite and was reassured it was great!! couldnt get to her to have a look, as i had no transport.

i arranged (very expensively) to have it collected and brought to my home....

Upon opening the door vans, I was met with a urine soaked, ripped up and full of building material sofas, worthy of the tip in a HUGE way!!

upon calling and texting her back, she told me its only freecycle, its your problem now, deal with it, its not ebay after all...

I have kids, as do most of the freecylers out there, and this was a HUGE let down.

IF you have this happen to you, email me personally on xxxxxxxx with the members name and email address and i will ban these members.

Freecycle is not there to be abused, neither are the members.

We have been very lenient and let some things slide in the past, but it seems there are always the few that take the mickey out of people.

Right rant over... Enjoy your weekend."

Of course, the thing with freecycle is that you go along and collect stuff. I had to post "why didn't you take a taxi to view the items first?" but for some reason the mods decided not to post my message - but hey, it's ok for the mods to get fleced & rant about it...

I must admit, I really do love the ingenuity of some people - their sob stories really are a work of art.
Sometimes, I like to offer something a bit 'tasty' just to get a good read. Later on I will post to say it's taken stc - the reality being that there was nothing on offer in the first place

Must admit, I am rather amazed at just how many post Wanted ads & state they have no transport so the donor will have to deliver - yeah, right.

I see a similar thing when I want to sell stuff on gumtree, my inbox fills up with 'I'm interested in item xxxxx call me on xxxxx' errm no... you want to buy it you can call me better still try and at least answer the email I send you in return.

Yes I have had a few of those emails, I tell them to call me too.

With regard to the freecycle thing, a friend of my sons lives in Chigwell and she has got some very nice items for her house and her kids - but then she does live in a VERY nice area - maybe that plays a part in the quality of the items and the sincerity of the donors? I would never arrange transport for something I had not seen on a site like that.

I would offer stuff on there but I think the only things that I would go and get would be garden related stuff like chairs and plants as I want a nice garden but dont have huge funds to spend on it.

I live on a very busy road and if I need to get rid of anything thats still usable I put it in the front garden and it usually takes an average of 5 mins to vanish lol.
