Re: First to second gear

This is pretty much the "Downunder" thread now, I reckon it's good having all the relevant Oz info in the one place :)

Anyway, I didn't receive a call today but that's ok because I remember her mentioning that it would be easier for her to post the info to me in the mail. It might have something to do with the car valuation process or something, so hopefully something will arrive soon. Don't worry, when I do get something you guys will know about it.

I've been meaning to ask you about the gearbox Kev, did it turn out that you were imagining things or has the devil been resurrected?

Yeh let us know how you get on with your dealer :)

Well it had been left cold for 3 full days and took it for a spin early this morning. Held my breath for about maybe 10 minutes, and no signs of gearbox problems. I'm going to wait for a few more weeks before opening the champagne, but it does look promising..

Re: First to second gear

hey Kev, what's the news?
still going strong?

Question is well timed. Dropped the car off this morning to have the hatchlid damage patched up. On the way there gearbox juddering returned, violent as ever. As I parked at the dealers, reverse clank also returned. Service rep I spoke to obviously needs glasses as he couldn't see where the hatchlid damaged was. Even tried to dodge the bullet by saying it wasn't them that did the damage - hell no, I pointed out someone had shoved something inside the hole and took a chunk off - no doubt about that.

Spoke to Service Manager, who said his team will look at the problem again, and suggested if I have a problem with the actual product to go back to the Sales department.

Looks like its time to sell.

Kev they all "clank" going into reverse. that's the gear linkage chaning from forward gears to reverse.
as for the judder, i'm now stumped

Ok that's fine, I rest my case on this.

Not fine with me. What you reckon is the likelihood of me demanding a replacement gearbox (and one that doesn't actually judders)?

this must be the 4th time you've been back (?).
I would say you should push them into doing something like replacing the box. Tell them that unless something is rectified and sharpish you'll be getting some advice on where to go next as the car isnt fit for the purpose intended. tell them they need to be onto the distributor and get it fixed, either a TRUE fix or a replacement box. The car itself is fine, correct? it's the gearbox that you arent happy about?

I've lost count how many times I've been back, but yes at least the third/fourth time for the gearbox.

That's what's on my mind as well. If the DL was standard on the GP, then I probably wouldn't have a case. But it was an option that I paid AUD1500 for it, which infuriates me because I've paid for a faulty product and they don't seem to be able to fix it. If they can't fix it this time, I'm going to demand a replacement.

And yes, everything else works fine (so far).

I would in no uncertain terms tell them that you are more than happy with the car but the issues with the gearbox are now getting beyond a joke and if it isnt fixed this time then you will have to take legal advice on the situation. and suggest to make it easier for everyone have they considered a replacement gearbox, and if not then why not?

It usually does the trick with dealers, does with me anyway! haha

Well as you can see I've been more than patient with the gearbox, and yes not only is it beyond a joke but its just ridiculous. I hate to see the dealers as much as they see me.

But problem is, if they do replace it and the new one still judders, what else can I do?

If the replacement gearbox is the same (which i would hope isnt the case, and going from experience of the D/L box here i would say it wont be) then i'm afraid it would be a new ball game and something would have to be done.
As a consumer you will find that you will always have the backing of any legal aids and usually win whatever is put to them. having siad that legal proceedings rarely take place!

Re: First to second gear

legal proceedings rarely take place!

Is that because the dealer usually settles the issue(s) before it becomes a legal battle?

I'm sending an email to the sales rep I originally dealt with now, so that he's at least aware of what's going on.

Re: First to second gear

Ok, this is straight from the service book for diesel models. Unless otherwise specified in red brackets, all items are serviceable at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 000km:

Check tyre condition/wear and adjust pressure, if necessary
Check operation of lighting system
Check operation of windscreen wash/wipe system
Check operation of windscreen wiper blades - front & rear
Check condition & wear of front & rear disc brake pads where fitted
Check condition and wear of rear drum brake linings where fitted [60, 120, 180]
Visual check on condition of: bodywork exterior and underbody protection, rigid and flexible sections of pipes, rubber components
Check cleanliness of bonnet and boot lock, clean and lubricate linkage
Visually inspect condition of various drive belts [60, 180]
Replace accessories drive belt [120]
Check/adjust handbrake lever travel
Check and adjust tappet clearance (1.9 Multi Jet) [60, 120, 180]
Check engine exhaust emissions/fumes
Replace fuel filter [60, 120, 180]
Replace air filter cartridge [60, 120, 180]
Top up fluid levels
Check efficiency of engine management systems (via test connection)
Visually inspect condition of timing drive belt [60, 210]
Replace toothed timing drive belt 1.9 Multi Jet * [150]
Check and, if necessary top up Dualogic oil level if fitted
Change engine oil and oil filter ** [Change engine oil and oil filter every 15 000km or 12 months]
Change brake fluid (or every 2 years) [60, 120, 180]
Replace pollen filter (or every 2 years)

* = Irrespective of the mileage, the timing belt must be changed every 4 years (48 months)
** = Engine oil and oil filter shall actually be changed according to the conditions of use of the car. Where fitted, a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) will indicate a need to change engine oil by a warning light or message (where provided) on the instrument panel

Re: First to second gear

I didn't realise you had the diesel models in your book Kev, thanks mate! :)

Although now after reading that I'm even more confused than ever, nowhere in that does it say anything about servicing every 20,000km, but now it says the oil does need to be changed every 15k but fiatdownunder says it doesn't. Not to mention the part with the ** that says something different again!! Fair enough 3 x 20k = 60k but what happens at 40k?

What the heck is going on???
   :bang: :bang: :bang:

Re: First to second gear

Don't fret man.. no offense to fiatdownunder or the saleswoman, but I don't think you can go wrong if you stick with whatever's in the service manual. Afterall Fiat provided this and if something does go wrong then you have whatever is in the service manual to back you up.
