bugga! did it work before removal?

That is the $64,000 question.

Dunno, was in the scrappies.

However, I have several lines of enquiry as i've thought about it.

1) The ECU is mounted on plastic, not metal as in the original application. Does it need an earth through the case?

2) I don't have the dash installed. Does it need the signal through the alternator warning lamp to be a complete circuit, therefore giving the 13.8V

3) Were the wires shielded after all?

pretty sure it dont need the case to be earthed... mine was laying on the passenger footwell carpet while testing.

the ecu engine run feed can be anything as far as i can tell. while testing I just bodged the wire into the live main feed connector.

are you putting a 12volt feed onto pin 1?
this is the ignition on wire. if you connect this with the engine run wire disconnected you will hear the ecu click on for a second or two then back off (does a self diagnostic)
if you hear that then connect the engine run wire (pin 12) the ecu clicks and the pas starts

I have one signal power feed to pin one from the cut out through a 10 amp fuse.

Piggy backed on to that is the blue signal lead, but through a switch on the dash.

So with ignition on I only have power to pin 1. then when the engine is running switch pin 12 on.

Back to the shed, looks like a shielded cable problem.

hummmm....
did you get the clicks from the ecu as I mentioned?

Get the first set of clicks, don't get the second set.

I've taken the connectors back out again looking for these shielded wires. Can't see anything with my glasses, will take home and find a magnify glass.

Have wired up column switch and have a wierd earth problem. No instruments and the fog light warning comes on when I put the HRW on.

well at least you get the clicks. means the ecu is doing something.

weird problem with the gauges. HRW? heated rear window? if so the only time I had that is when i left one of the connectors to the gauges off or swapped the red and white connector over... cant remember

I'll just tap into the gauge earth and put a new one in.

Earth problem gone away.

I have also removed the switch, just in case its lighting up, but not passing anything, will check with meter tonight.

Confused.com.

Switch is OK.

I have checked the continuity of the 4 torque sensor wires. All are connected to individual points on the multiplug with no continuity anywhere else so the cable seem to be multistrand without a seperate signal wire in the middle.

That sounds right... 4 wires and mine has a braid around them which is connected just to pin 8.
I used http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=137

if you want I can have a look at what kind of signal the column puts out... Im guessing it just resistance change depending on the torque on the left or right sensor

I cut the plug from the ECU and the torque sensor looms with about three inches of wire on each. There are only four pins inside the torque sensor plug, no shielding can be seen.

At the ECU end, pin 8 is for the blue wire from the torque sensor.

My wiring seems to be different to yours, but it all comes from the same car.

the colours of the wires coming from the column are red, green, black, yellow?

red goes to ecu pin 6
green goes to pin 7
black to pin 8 (shield on mine is also connected to this)
yellow goes to pin 14

the shied is only connected on the ecu end.
also the 4 wires came out the ecu about a inch or two before going into the shielded wire

Nope.

pin 6 is brown, pin 7 brown/green, pin 8 dark blue, pin 14 red/white.

These colours match exactly the colours and type of cable coming from the plug for the sensors.
