Technical Techie Question

Hello,

I have just bought my first brava for £995 at 76000 miles, just bought it about three/four days ago. Now since then I have needed a new starter motor £160.00 and since I didn't have a service history I got the cambelt and tensioners changes at £180.00. Picked the car up tonight and have been told that there is noise coming from the camshaft area (drivers side I think he said) and it requires further investigation.

This is an R reg 1.4 and wondered if anyone knew what this could be? I mean its booked in for a service on Wed 9th for spark plugs and further investigation. Am I looking at another high cost? or do you think I am worrying for nothing or should I get it look at like tommorrow?

I believe this is a common problem, caused by the cam followers (I think)

I'm not sure how expensive it will be, might try searching for a few other threads on cam follower issues, and seeing what the solutions were.

Kev (bravo_owd_chap, my hubby and Bravo moderator) says if its been starved of oil or hasnt been serviced regularly then there is a pipe just above the cam shaft that lubricates the cam itself and these quite often get blocked, this in turn causes pre-cam wear on the bearings and can cause it to wear quicker and seize thus causing it to be an expensive repair

Managed to get it in for the service tommorrow morning so I will know what is going on then, it sounds as though its gonna need a new cam shaft but what do I know.

Right now I have a figure in my head of how much I am willing to spend, £600 and no more so lets hope that is enough for any problems found.

Thats good to hear as long as there is nothing else wrong! I have already paid like £360 on new starter motor and cambelt and tensioners.

Got the flu right now and just moved house on Satuarday and thats knocked the stuffing out of me so if I hear any really bad news you are sure to hear about a savage man with the flu wrecking local garage!
