General tar on car

whats the best way of getting tar off the bodywork without doing any damage?tried some spray..it didnt really take much off though!!

We use Tar and Glue remover at work. Petrol rubbed lightly with a cloth does pretty much the same thing or some T-Cut.

AutoGlym make a tar and adhesive remover... just used it recently to remove adhesive and it was spot-on, no paintwork damage at all, but as for tar i dunno...

Hi klemster,

Strange as it may sound... try putting some butter on the spot and leaving it overnight. Tar should soften and you should be able to rub it off.

My granny used to swear by eucalyptus oil for taking tar out of clothes, don't know what effect it would have on the paint though.

I've always used white spirit on a soft cloth. Wax again afterwards tho.
