punto mk1, 1.2. 8v., recently changed headgasket, head been in machine shop, washed with steam, skimed and tested, also valve compression test done, all fine. Now i put everything back, all works fine, but tapping sound comes up, when rise revs. what it could be ?
before bring to machine shop, I took off camshaft and all tappets .

p.s. timing belt set properly , also with mark on flywheel, all spot on, checked twice.

thanks

hmmmm .... headgasket wrong way ? Possible, but i have number times checked, as I was aware about that. there was possible put headgasket only two ways, and one way was blocking one hole, so i went other way, make sure no holes covered.

Head wasnt split. just camshaft was off, and lifters (or tappets - dont know right name) was off. on two or three i saw some black dots...

Pull off cam cover, get someone to turn engine over. You should see a lot of oil squiting around the cam.

If that's OK, get Haynes, get feeler guages, measure valve clearances, check that shims are there(!).

Finally, if the steel baffle in the top of the cam cover comes loose, it can make one hell of a racket.

Thanks, will have a look.

Is tappets possible adjust? well , will have a look in to my Haynes manual, if there is such info.

my bad, manual advise refit tappets same order... but i didnt... thought they all same.. at least looks same.

Would buying set of new tappets would fix that problem ?

No. There are two parts to the tappets (as it were), the "bucket" which sits immediately on top of the valve and the shim, which fits between the bucket and the cam (looks like a thick steel penny).

So, on these engines, tappet adjustment is just about putting the right sized shim in. You need to measure the gaps with a set of metric feeler guages. Chances are you'll be able to use some of the old shims.

It's pretty well described in the Haynes. If you get stuck, get back. Big Mick at eurocarcare in derby (google will find) always seems to have shims at a better price than anyone else.

best practice advice

whenever stripping anything down all replace in the order of whenst they came because mechanical thingies wear at different rates
i even put the head bolts back in the holes they came from for instance

For future reference if you are concerned about hg on the wrong way around there is usually an idiot proof tab on the top left corner of the gasket that sticks out about 6mm from the block and should be visible just above the dipstick hole. Any ones I've seen are about 15mm wide with a semicircular notch cut out of the outer edge.
