Hi Guys
Anyone familar with XP on their computer? I have picked up an add on that tells me I am infected by a virus but I have got the all singing and dancing Mcafee protection. this is someone trying to sell software!
Where do I look in the system to delete this little ba*****

Run Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com and Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org

The icon you are seeing is a rouge anti virus product - trying to scare you in to buying it, when there are no viruses on your computer. (n)

Run both of these programs in Safe Mode by by pessing F8 when you turn the computer on and select "SAFE MODE"

Hope this helps!

Jamie.

Any more problems PM me.

Please stop scanning before you hurt yourself.

I had one of those "Your computer will kill you in your sleep if you don't buy me" viruses. I used every search tool available, and searched my whole disk manually and found sweet F A.
The thing was hidden well and good and after 3 days and many strong black cups of coffee, I had a moment of clarity. SYSTEM RESTORE.

Go to start>>all programs>>accessories>>system tools>>sytem restore.
Select restore sytem to an earlier time.
This puts your computer back to how it was on the date you select but all your files remain the same, you just lose programs you installed after the chosen date (including the bug). Also if anything goes wrong then you can go forward again to undo any changes. There is no risk in doing it, just make sure you go back far enough:D

The virus can embedd it's self so far into the system in can actually hide in system restore, don't rely on it.

All i'm saying is I had exactly the same problem and system restore worked for me, and its not actually a virus, its a hidden program but its there for advertising not malicious intent so its more like ad-ware. The only thing it does is use up system resources, its not actually collecting or destroying anything.
