Well i noticed recently when turning the wheel at slow speed i get like a twanging noise  spounds like the spring being twisted or something but not quite sure, got a friend to turn the wheel while head under bonnet and the strut top (with nut on it etc) was moving in the bracket that bolts the strut in place  do these bracket type thingys (strut top assembly?) have bushes in them that can go? has anyone heard of anything like this?

got me stumped :( and the noise is very worrying

Yup, top mount not rotating. Cheap to replace. I had this on my Coupe.

Yes top mounts have either bushes or bearings, spherical bearing top mounts are the best super smooth, but expensive :(

What top mounts are you using RallyCinq, adjustable ones? from TAS?

And our servay says, twannnggg eh uh, when overtaking on way home (bless lil clio doing 30 in a 60  heard another twangy type noise (first time i heard it moving) and the car veered off to the right, stopped and the arch practically touching tyre, slow roll home and on inspection the spring has snapped :(

Maybe the springs snapped because your top mount had gone, and not having to top of the spring rotate unduly stressed the spring? I'm reasonably sure that when you change the spring, you'll find the top mount doesn't rotate.

Ironically, was the drivers side, which wasnt the side sitting low at mk etc  strut top spins fine etc, so not quite sure

Have refitted my koni stuff with the 1 leaky shocker, it'll do to pootle about slowly, eyes open for cheap spax kit now or just for gmax 60mm springs :p

poor spring :( think may have been caused by big pot hole on way to work, not sure if i can be bothered but may write a letter of complaint, doubt it'll be looked at though

the final twang was probably when the spring snapped, i had this happen on my escort about a year ago when i looked at the actual break in the spring i could see that it had been stressed for a while and gradually cracking then it had got about 1/2 to 2/3 the way through and had snaaped, unluckily for me though my broken spring dropped into the tyre and wrecked that as well
