I was going to do the front lowering today. the allen key hole in the middle, on top of the strut, has broken... could it of been the weather? anyway... i'm stuffed with ideas. should I buy a second hand strut? I don't have a vice to clamp the strut to loosen that allen key bolt but i heard you can do it while it's in the car. do you loose the nut around the bolt or the actual allen key bolt?? if so.. that's prob why the allen key bolt broke !
and the hub to strut nuts have smoothed out... argh!!!!!
:bang::bang: :(

Well, you need to undor the 3 small bolts, then the two big bolts on the wheel hub assembly, then clamp the spring using spring clamps, and undo the nut that is on the bolt with the allen key top.

To slacken, you turn the allen key clockwise, and the top nut anti-clockwise. If you intend to re-use the strut, you should actually keep the allen key still (to prevent the shaft from spinning in the shock absorber) and turn the nut counter-clockwise. However, since the allen key hole is broken, you will never be able to fasten the top nut to the published torque accurately, so a replacement shock absorber is required. Remove the shock absorber and top mount assembly and take it to your local garage to get the top nut blasted off with an air impact wrench so that you may retrieve your top mount, washer and bushing. It may be a false economy to replace with secondhand dampers since a pair of Monroes with a 2 year warranty would cost less than £70, including the new top nuts that you will require.

When doing it all up again, remember to set the torque properly. For the top nut, a regular torque wrench will obstruct the allen key hole, requiring crow's foot adapters. Don't forget to use an appropriate conversion formula when using a crow's foot adapter.

Edit: Don't forget to have coil compressors applied before loosening the top nut, or tightening a new one down. There should be no pressure from the spring until the top nut is in place and torqued properly.
Don't worry though, damper top nuts have the best of us beat. I've done this procedure three times now and every time has been a pain in the backside.

Thanks alot for the info... i never realised that it wouldn't be able to torque back up if i got it off. so with new dampers you don't get the top bushing and stuff? so i need to get that off this strut? ... hopefully the other side will work...

That's right, as long as the rubbery bit of the top mount is in good condition, it can be reused. Just make sure you've got the top washer (like a very small dinner plate with a hole in the bottom) and the steering bushing (metal cylinder with hole through the middle) since these will not come with the new strut.

It is advisable to replace dampers in pairs to maintain the handling characteristics of the car. Chances are that the other side is not far off needing replacement. It does mean buggering about with another top nut though.

I don't know your budget exactly, but for less than £118 delivered from Europerformance, you can have Spax shortened and uprated dampers at the front to complement your stiffer springs. Otherwise OEM shock absorbers can be had for £65.67 the pair, delivered from shop4parts. In fact, we may even have a FiatForum discount for shop4parts, so it may be even cheaper.

Just noticed the spax ones are £98 for 1 ! not a pair :(
I'm gettin new standard shocks now... i dismantled the other strut and the fluid is all gone! there's no pressure at all.. tottally messed up
found struts for £15 each on ebay with £10 postage so £50 for a set? seems ok... stil struggling with the broken top allen key hole strut :( :bang:
gonna try using a impact driver tonight on the nut:worship:

Seems i have to resort to the air gun for the top nut. should garages do this for free? :p
or like a fiver? or what? :yuck:

Ook, got the hub nuts and bolts off with GREAT difficulty. but will happen many more times in a lifetime so time to get used to it! (y)
goin to use a impact gun to take the top nut off, if not... grindy grindy it off!
