I think you'll need an actual oil sump plug removal key. Get one from your local motor factors for a few quid. I've got one which does Fiats and Fords.(y)

Thanks for this. I thought there was a post some time ago which said something about cutting an Allen key to a short length and putting the stub into a socket, but a search of the Forum didn't come up with it.

Not so. My 2.4 has a quite different design from my previous 1.6. Sump is a finned alloy design, not steel and the sump plug includes a small o-ring and a very much smaller Allen key nut.

I did read somewhere that Stilo steel sump engines had a 12mm sunken hex sump plug whereas alloy sump engines had an 8mm sunken hex. Can anyone in the Forum confirm this?

Just looked at my 1.4 16V and I would say the sump is alloy with ribs along the bottom. Definitely not your usual black steel variety. So does this need an 8mm key?
