Strange Grinding Noise

I'm getting a weird noise from what sounds like under the front pan of my hgt, mainly at town driving speeds at low revs and under gentle acceleration in high gears. Sounds a bit like sand-paper been dragged on metal (which i'm guessing isn't good!).
At first i thought it was a power steering thing, but now i'm not so sure as it does it in a straight line too.
Anyone experienced anything similar?

could be the thrust bearing in yr clutch on it's way out?

Mine did it from the day I bought it until the day I sold it.

Nothing went bang either.
