Hi All

I have a 2013 Fiat 500 and it has a Stop Start. Recently the Stop Start became intermittent and then stopped working altogether.

I have replaced the Car Battery (with a proper Stop Start version - expensive at over £100) and reset the Car Computor Memory (as per the Handbook) by leaving the battery disconnected for over 30 minutes - thus 'forcing' the memory to resort to Factory Settings.

But still the Stop Start function does not work.

Please does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks all

Have you met the
'Conditions of operation'

Engine temp.. @90'c

Aircon...off

Headlights ..off

Other electrical loads feature heavily

My 2013 punto needed the seatbelt plugged in before starting ;)

I had 1600 errors stored for S-S

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I have met all 'conditions of operation' and, please be aware that it used to work, even with Air Con on and Headlights on.

Now it has a brand new battery and it should be working again, but it is not............

Indeed I have! I drove myself half mad trying to sort my SS ? I’m my personal experience what sorted it was a new AGM SS battery I chose VARTA after reading reviews
Now my SS works almost faultlessly
I did replace the main earth strap (gearbox to chassis) cleaned up both battery contacts from car to battery & the quick release negative

I also have my battery on charge once a month as I have a permanent connection for charger on engine.... as I only do short trips daily!

Now my hair has grown back as I’m not pulling it out ?

The intermittent operation followed by complete failure does suggest battery issues. How long has it been since the new battery was installed? According to the handbook the S/S requires a period of 'learning' before it begins to operate normally. This period is of unspecified duration however!

I haven't experienced this in my own 2013 because both times that the battery was changed auxiliary power was connected.

The only time my SS is intermittent is if it’s really cold and my heater is working hard once up to temp SS will work

My previous battery was a SS from Halfords and under a year old ...it was pathetic as my SS only worked for six months .. I’d charge the battery up SS would come back but quickly disappear
It’s of my opinion it’s all down to the battery quality and poor maintenance of critical operating components like the earth strap

My hair will never grow back ???

Perhaps it wasn't the battery.

The giveaway is what was happening before it stopped working. If the length of time it waited before restarting was getting shorter over a period of time, the battery is the likely culprit. If it suddenly went from waiting 3 mins before restarting to not working at all, the cause is more likely elsewhere.

Leave it for a few more days, just in case it needs to relearn the new battery parameters.

After that, things to check include the earth strap as already suggested, and the position sensors for the gear lever and clutch pedal.

Sometimes after coming to a stop, jiggling the gear lever whilst in neutral can activate the system.

Another thing that sometimes happends with failing batteries is that folks attempt to either recharge the battery, or use jump leads, without following the correct approved procedure. If you jump start or fast charge directly across the main battery terminals, you can permanently damage the intelligent battery sensor (IBS). If this happens, the IBS will need to be replaced before S/S will work.

Try this ,
Turn the keys in ignition so lights come on dash.but don't start car.
Then press accelerater to the floor 3 times.(within 10 seconds)
Then take keys out.
Then restart car.
Mine worked and stop start hasn't come back on.3 weeks now.
Hope this helps
