Hi, My stilo has gained a fault where the exhaust sounded very noisey-luckily the exhaust was under warranty and was replaced this seemed to slightly reduce the noise however.....
It is still there and the exhaust company said that the front pipe is getting red hot and may be causing the problem? although the engine is not overheating. Also now and again the car will also smell of petrol and now the engine warning light has come on.The car has also lost performance.
Does anyone have an idea? Ive been to places but they dont have the diagnostic equipment for the stilo and fiat want an outrages amount of money for just running a diagnostic.
Does anyone know a good garage in the manchester area?
Cheers
Alex

Blocked catalyser? Is there one in the manifold downpipe on a Stilo? Is that model dependent?

Thanks for your reply...its a 1.6 dynamic if that helps? My dads asked around a few mechanics but there landrover specialists and didn't know exactly but have said that it could be the cat or the air intake?

Nope does not rattle as far as I can think.Just had a look at cats! quite expensive!!! I believe its a maniverter on a stilo 1.6? cheapest I can find is £250

You will get the rattle if the Catalyser breaks up, if it gets clogged up it probably wont rattle Try a scrappies? Or Partfinder? You have options but best to confirm that is the problem first IMO.

I think it is rare for stilo cats to fail (surprisingly)

A mate had very similar symptoms with his laguna. exhaust was actually glowing, it was so hot. Turned out to be knackered lambda sensor iirc. You been using supermarket petrol by any chance?

Diagnostics test should show a fault look
for slow switching high ± low voltage switch
should cycle quickly.

Not sure if this will work on the fly by wire
throttle, the older cable throttle ok.

The process I have used in the past is:-
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
I Warmed my engine to normal operating temp
out of gear, reved to 2000rpm and held the throttle
steady, if the lambda's ok it should hold steady revs
and engine noise. If I had to keep adjusting the amount
of throttle to keep a rock steady rpm then I knew
the lambda is more than likely on it's way out.

I repeated at 3000rpm it only took a minute at each
rpm to check so I didn't blow my engine as it's reving
with no load on it. Copy at your own risk.

John
