Now its had its 72k service i have been told that the injectors may be to blame, however i am being told that the third year warranty doesn't cover it, nor does the first two year unlimited mileage warranty.

As the car has covered 72,000 miles, it is now out of warranty as the 3rd year (dealer warranty) is only 3 years/ 60,000 miles.

All diesels will 'blow' unburned fuel out of the exhaust to some extent. I saw a Passat TDI this evening that did a good impression of a smoke-machine as the driver booted it away from a roundabout!

Petrols also 'blow' unburned fuel, but you can't see it as it is a much more refined product.

I have a 2002 Stilo JTD remapped to 155 BHP when it was about 18mths old, I've done about 14k miles since (currently 25k on the clock). It has smoked under heavy acceleration, and I have left the odd car in a cloud of acrid smoke, but otherwise not excessively. I normally drive quite conservatively and this probably contributed to the build up of deposits.

I put it through it's first MOT last week and it failed on the smoke test, it was too dense, I must admit to half expecting this and maybe having to get the re-map removed. The garages solution was too put a bottle of wynn's fuel system cleaner directly into the fuel filter (so it worked quicker). They road tested it to get it up to temp.and it passed.

I have since noticed that the throttle response is improved, acceleration is quicker and there's less than half the amount of smoke. I had to boot it v.hard to leave any kind of cloud in my wake.

Mike

Fortunately my garage is reasonable and it only cost an extra £15 + VAT, but I think next year I'll run through something similar myself should the smoke return. Thinking back to my first MOT when I had a rover 420SDi I had a similar problem, again cured by a dose of cleaner and a quick thrash.

Hi,

I use this sort of product in my JTD every 3000 miles. I do 20,000+ miles a year but mine doesnt smoke but it does seem to slow down.
I just add it to my diesel and within a few days accelaration and throttle response improve again.

The bottle says to use every 2500 miles or 3 months which ever comes first. I buy my wynns from halfrauds, £4.99 every 8 weeks aint bad for a better running car(y)

i'd highly recommend it to everyone

neil

Yep i know what you mean!! Mine smokes like a mofo!! lol

But i have the unfortunate advantage of an exhaust that points upwards, so ever two weeks the ass of my car look black...not pretty!!

Will try out that wynn's tomorrow!

But only seemed to be worse ever since i got the re-map...but standing still the car doesn't smoke, only when changing gear. So flew past the MOT clean as a whistle (y)

Plus i found a really good hand carwash place that does it for £4 in Northampton....problem solved! And i don't need to change the remap cos i love the  its puts on my face!!

The most common cause of diesels smoking when driven hard is the fact that they have been poodled around for weeks on end first. Turbo diesels put out alot of exhaust pressure on full throttle and this tends to shift alot of particulates that get trapped in the exhaust system. Its these particulates that you see coming out in great clouds of smoke behind you. If you drive the car hard all the time you wouldnt have these in the exhaust so you would never see the problem, (a remapped engine would probably smoke a little due to the tuning procedure).
You should always thrash a turbo diesel when fully warmed through at least once a week to get rid of the particulates and also to avoid glazing of the cylinder bores. The engine will always feel more responsive after a good thrash as the back pressure in the exhaust is reduced hugely by emptying the particulates out.

Totally agree - which is why when I get my hands on the Ulysse at the weekend, after it has been used on the school run all week, I give it a good thrashing - always drives like a dream after that....

i've bought a bottle from halfrauds and added it today as the car seems to have slowed down over the past few weeks (needs a service in 2000 miles), i'll see how it goes

I've just done the same as the car doesn't seem quite as quick in the midrange plus the fuel economy appears to have suddenly dropped by 4mpg.
It's due a service in 2.5k

my mpg is down to 44mpg at the moment, it should be around 52mpg. perhaps the cold weather has something to do with it, or a service is required. it says something in the manual about cleaning the fuel filter every 6000 miles, perhaps this needs cleaning, or air filter?

i doubt thrashing it will help as mine spends 1hr a day at 80mph on a motorway so the engine should be clean and not clogged up

Chromegrey are you me?

I do a similar daily routine:eek:

I doubt a thrash will sort it either as mine regularly gets that when it isn't on the motorway and it hasn't stopped the smoking or changed the fuel economy.:(

i doubt i'm you but it's strange how we've lost performance at the same time, it has to be a cold weather thing. i'm doing a 400 mile trip tomorrow with the wynns stuff in the tank so that should all be used up and the injectors etc all clean for the weekend......ready for a blast to see if it's still slow

i remember my dad having a problem with an air mass sensor on his rover diesel, when it was damp there was no power from the engine - perhaps the stilo is the same????

how many miles have you done? could it be something has warn out?
i've done 33,000 in 12 months, 25,000 have been with a remap

Hey guys, when i got my car remapped Nigel found that the air sensor on mine was knackered. But the effect of it was no power after 3000rpm! I reckon the power loss will be a heck of a lot more noticeable if it was that...but then i could be wrong

Mine's done 45k since July 2003.

I thought turbo cars were supposed to appreciate cold weather.
Mine usually does 47/48mpg but is now showing 42.5.

Oh and I haven't had it remapped.
