Technical stilo hole in gearbox....but a 1.8!

hi all, well it seems that my 4th gear woes have finished now...as my gearbox has decided to blow a nice hole in the side of its self...

Was setting off for a drive, and i heard a few clanks from under the car...so i pulled over, had a look....and the familiar smell of graphite...

rolled the car back and was greeted with a puddle of gearbox oil. only a small drip, so i drove it home (less than a minute away from home) jacked it up and see this... :(

suggestions of a way forward? im guessing its not repairable...

anyone know what other cars share the same gearbox...forum copy of eper has been down since the mobo faliure...

EDIT: i think what happened was, whatever was roaming in the gearbox causing a dodgy 4th finally got in the wrong place at the wrong time and punched its way out, causing the hole. coincidentally the cars gears are now better than they've ever been.....

Transmission and diff all in the same housing, PN - 55201092 is specific to the 1.8 as far as I can tell.

i think what ever it was found its way into there and got slinged to the edge violently smashing the casing....

Is it possible something on the road hit it and broke it strangely curing your 4th gear problem?

shadey, as it seems you have access to a copy of eper, could you check if the punto HGT (also 1.8, same engine as stilo) uses the same gearbox? as they are much easier to come by...
thanks

possible yes, but i doubt it, i was pulling off from a junction, so not going very fast, and not kicking anything up...and it "felt" like it came from the heart of the car :(

Check out the attached screen shot, the case is available seperately.

Its says if the case is requested for Stilo, Punto, Idea etc. so it must be the same case for Stilo and Punto.

Ive downloaded a copy of eper 55, so will have a browse if i can get it to work. thanks for the help shadey, greatly appreciated, your badge went in the post box this morning before 8.

How does this look? 50k gearbox for £300...a bit pricey no?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIAT-STILO-1-...CarParts_SM&hash=item2c5c9d2108#ht_500wt_1156

also my garage have said they will do a "swap" for £150 max including seals changed, flush and oil....they don't recommend a recon gearbox as from their experience, recons are "bad units" which are repaired to the bare minimum standard to fix ans sell on...opinions? (im inclined to trust their judgement as they have always been honest and fair with me)

This post contains eBay links which may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
I'm still learning how to use the ePER.

"Better the devil you know than the devil you don't"

So may be it would be better to purchase a brand new case(cost about the same as the 50k ebay box) and transfer the guts of your own gearbox into it?

Although a 50k gearbox bolted straight on would be a quick and easy fix.

and breath lol...seems like its all sorted...

redcorn in Tottenham (10 mins away) has one for £150. gonna pick it up tomorrow and drop it and the car off and for another £150 my local garage will do the swap by Wednesday using Selena (sp?) oils and new seals all round.

the thing is "the devil i know" was a pile of **** tbh....and only got worse, id be hard pushed to find a worse one....synchro on 3rd was almost gone and im sure it whined in 2nd...redcorn are giving me a 30day guarantee...ill be sure to test within an inch of its life before then...only thing is the redcorn box has "unknown" mileage....but for £150 i cant really complain...

after a thorough trawling on my eper (had to set pc date back a year to get it to work lol), the case used on the punto was only the same for a brief time, so unlikely "any old" box from an HGT would fit...also the whole box in the 1.8 stilo doesn't have any compatibility with any other fiats/alfas or lancias as you first suspected :( ...the specialist fiat breakers and mechanic confirmed this.

yesterday, a friend of mine found what we suspect is THE piece that punched a hole in the casing...

I went to the mechanic this mornign before work to show him, and he said straight away its part of a gear from the diff and he reckons the diff was too "tight" causing excess wear (hence the slight blue tinge) and eventual faliure resulting in the diff breaking up and shooting thorugh the box...and it still drives because only a "chunk" broke off...he also thinks the diff exploding has nothing to do with the stiff 4th gear problems....needless to say, im keeping the old box and its getting dismantled, with pics, to see exactly what's going on.....ive also shot an e-mail across to FIAT as a complain of premature faliure, not expecting anything from it, just gonna see where it takes me, because IMHO a well maintained car should fail so badly after only 57k (n)
