Any ideas on the following would help me to start checking what it could be at fault.

My wife has had the Car for 1 year and she is fed up with it.

Constant failure warning problems. Air bag, engine failure(turbo stops) and others.
Rear break discs replaced ( My fault for not checking)
Last week front suspension spring snapped and fell on tyre( Recall mod done but still did not stop it falling onto the tyre)
Dented in some places
Front exhaust pipe cracked at front: Managed to weld it up
Other minor things

Now the fault is this loud knocking from the engine. (Sounds expensive)

Just driving down the road on a cold morning and the noise suddenly started.

Possible causes?
Big end?? May not be as it is coming from the cam belt area we think.
Oil pump failure: No oil light (changed the oil 3 weeks ago)
Exhaust(cracked manifold or gaskets)?? my first thought but it appears to be intact.

Had a breakdown service out to tow me home and he thinks it is the Cam belt that has jumped a tooth and the engine is knocking or pinking?
Cam belt looked OK but he thinks it is the cam belt tensioner or water pump which is a common fault. Seen some bits in the forum/

I have had enough of cars and would like to hear from anyone that may of had the same problem.

Searched through most of the forum and cannot find much
Cheers

Does it only happen at idle and low revs? (Below 2000rpm)

Could be the aux/crank pulley, they are about £40-60 depending on whehter you have air con and are pretty easy to fit. Very common problem on the JTD engine

It seems to happen at all revs but not exceeded 2000rpm yet.

I will have a look in that area.

Can anyone point me towards the timing setting for Stilo.

I have a CD from Ebay and is not very detailed and links are not working.

But i have lots of info on the bravo engine??

Where do you get one for this price? I need one for my JTD.
Thanks.

Is the noise RPM dependant? ie does the knocking get faster as the engine revs increase?

I had a very similar problem on my Multipla diesel - turned out to be a bit of debris stuck in the alternator belt - a cheap repair for a change...

The car is on an 02 plate

Not sure about the cam belt being changed before. Had it 1 year now

70K miles now so will get the cam belt changed.

The loud banging noise was the Crank/Aux pulley. the rubber had just melted away and bits of rubber everywhere. The pulley can be moved back and forwards. As advised on here

Will have it taken off tomorrow and a new pulley fitted. Yes we have the Air con as well.

Is it best to buy a complete Cam kit or just the belt?

Also is it worth changing the water pump?

Any ideas on the price of all these bits? I want to keep it cheap.
I am normally a ford or Vauxhall person and not use to the expensive parts.

I think the wife wants to sell after it is going but i think they are good cars, just niggley problems.

Oh the other problem we have had for 1 year is air gets into the clutch fluid every month. Cannot get the gears and sometimes needs bleeding. I think the seal has gone in the slave cylinder. Crazy, it is now inside the gearbox. Next big job i think?? plus the other front spring before it brakes as well.

Cheers

Always change the complete kit when changing the belt. You will need idlers and a tensioner. I changed the water pump at the same time because if that fails after you have changed the belt, you will have to renew it all again.

That sounds about right. Did you ask about a water pump?

Engine still tapping loud.

Had the following replaced:
Crank Aux pulley. Completely shot away and broken. £83 (fiat price) You were right with the Diagnostic of the first fault
Cam belt £25
Aux belt £12

Did not change water pump or tensioners due to possibly selling car.

Not sure why the engine is now still rattling around. still loud

Brother done Cam belt but did not use tools?? Maybe it is one tooth out somewhere and now hitting the valves. Maybe the belt had jumped a tooth??

Never ending problems.

Any ideas would be useful.

Does any one have the dimensions of the locking brackets and exact position the cams and the crank have to be?? Any pictures? or marks would be useful.

Cheers

Not done it myself but I gather timing marks are present on the JTD engine so should be straight forward.

I'm rather dismayed at your apparent indifference to the life of your engine

I have a similar problem.

The engine starts up cold and after 2 seconds a pretty loud knocking sound kicks in. It sounds metallic, I even checked if the hood screws were loose...

It appears to come from the left part of the engine (if looking from the front bumper).

It disappears if I keep it at 1500rpm, and reappears gradually on lower rpm.

After 5-7 minutes (just warming up I guess) the noise goes away completely and the engine works fine, no ticking at any rpm.

It started appearing a couple of weeks ago, just a little at first and now got to its maximum I guess. Gets me preocupied I would say.

The oil had to be changed like a while ago. The car computer tells me to take the car to "Revision service soon", I guess it doesnt have "You moron should have done it xxxkm ago". Will do. Could this be the cause?
Makes sense to me. If the oil gets too thin (old) - it will take a while to get to all parts, especially on top.

The belt was changed in September, the whole KIT.

What could it be?

(Sorry for my english and thanks)

Probably the bottom pulley.

take off the aux belt and run the engine, if it's stopped, that your issue.

definately you have a failed crank shaft aux drive pulley. (about £90 for the part and is easy to change)
Dont drive the car if possible and change it now while it is rattling because when they break free, they can do a lot of expensive damage to the engine.
