Sick of not knowing anything about cars! Bought a KN57i induction kit off the net (my oil air filter box was cracked, bolts missing etc), and it has turned up, but the pipe is entirely different, I am more confused about the breather hose coming from the engine and going into the air filter. If I installed the K&N with the tubing it arrived with, this breather hose would just not be attached to anything.

My question is; one, what does the breather hose do? and two, does it need to be attached to the air filter? If I don't what are the repercussions? I think id need another breather hose to replace it with, the previous owner took the air box off and its cracked it.

if i was you i would just put a standard k and n square air filter in the box, just pull the old one out and put a new one in.
much better than them stupid bomp bomp ones.
then again we have all done it.

I would have done that but the case for the air filter is knackered! Its all cracked and its not going to be getting any decent compression inside. And also, I have the K&N in my car boot haha, so I wont be sending it back.

Isn't it always the way that when you buy something you find nothing but good reviews, but then when you have bought it and its in your hand you find nothing but bad ones? haha.

To be fair, an OEM airbox and filter would have cost me the same as the K&N, so I am expecting it to be slightly better at least than my cracked airbox and the filter which (judging by the rest of the car), has never been changed!!

The hose is a crankcase breather. It doesn't have to be plumbed back in but you will need a small filter on the end of it. Halfords or ebay for it. Look up crackcase hose filter.

Allowing the crank case breather pipe to vent direct to atmosphere is an MOT fail(I think). Some garages may let it pass but most wont.

It needs to be connected back to the induction so anything coming out is burnt in the engine

Thanks mate, looks like someone will stick up for me!

Liking that oil catcher tank and the filter, not as expensive as I thought either. Think thats being bought! I am thinking of chopping up my existing air filter box, and just sticking the K&N on the end of that so everything is plumbed in for now, and then buy the parts you've suggested off ebay when I get paid!

Each to his own, but they work fine for me. And the only reason for oil contamination of the MAF is because people clean them and then don't read the instructions and use too much oil to re-impregnate them.

we found out that the little filters were not a mot fail at least not back then (maybe now) but they do stink they stop oil coming out but not the smell, it can be quite sickly sitting in a car with oil fumes coming in. id just stick the K&n on ebay

Might just stick the entire car on eBay and buy a bus pass the amount of trouble its given me haha. Fair enough to air filter's my fault, just found out I have a flat back tyre haha, someone really doesn't want me driving this car.

Don't sell the car, she just needs a little TLC and she'll be fine.

If you were to sell the K&N you probably make enough to buy an used OEM airbox and new filter.

If you do decide to use it the best option is to tee the crank breather back in somehow. No chance of crank case fumes entering the car, deffinately not an MOT fail and probably work out cheaper than an oil catcher and filter.

I do love the car but its just unreliable and needs alot of money sinking in it. The oil catcher does look cool; so might just invest or do some kind of OEM-KN franken-filter so its tee'd into the induction system

usually when you buy a k and n kit you will get a crome pipe that connects to the origional pipe from the air box. on that crome pipe there is a split off pipe on the side of it to connect the air breather pipe into.
