Hi I don't know how this happened but I blame the Caster nut somehow it has rounded off the top so I can't secure the steering wheel back on!

has anybody got any idea how this is going to be fixed ie. how to remove anx replace the rod

Hi,
You need (at least) a new upper steering colum, airbag clockspring and steering wheel nut. Possibly new control switches as well. Sorry to be blunt, but if you have to ask the question, I strongly suggest you get the car trailered to a garage and get them to do it. The steering and airbag are critical items so not for the inexperienced. The "caster nut" (not a term I recogise) did not chew up the thread without help. This could be close to a write-off.

Thanks for your reply. is there a guide to changing the upper steering column?

The nut is an inanimate piece of metal, it can't be blamed for some ham-fisted fool crossing the threads and destroying the shaft-end. If you don't know how it happened, then someone else must have done it. Don't let them near your car again.

You can buy a used column assembly, eg Ebay item 271748567703. Not hugely expensive, but a lot of work involved to change them over (swapping the ignition lock etc).

If it's an old car towards the end of economic life, I would consider asking a competent mechanic to look at drilling into the column and tapping a thread for a heavy bolt & washer. The wheel has splines for turning force, the end fixing only needs to stop it falling onto your lap when you accelerate too hard.

Thanks for some of your comment. I am the fool who did it. The thin caster nut was not secured in the large 24mm socket straight but i couldn't see it cause it was inside!! Yes i should have felt it go through the thread however.

I ended up using a die to create a new thread for a new nylock nut and it's solid again - ill even add thread lock to secure it better once ive finished with it - so sorted :slayer: less of a fool now i fixed it

Is your airbag still working? The clock spring looks mangled.

Hi. The airbag and horn both weren't working beforehand hence why i was looking at the set up. Months ago i changed the indicator stalk (inc clockspring) to fix an indicator issue which worked fine....everything did...months later whilst doing work on the EGR valve and brakes the airbag and horn suddenly didn't work.

I've cleaned all the connections, cleared codes (2 wont budge) and changed the airbag ECU - none have worked. So renewing the indicator stalk with a new clockspring is next (seeing as i have definitely played with it whilst cleaning connections - nob!) now i have defo mangled it proper as i heard it crunching while turning the wheel once.

I started this thread before about it https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/441572-airbag-sensor-warning.html
