I too am having a problem with my fiat panda active the steering wheel locked on me very scary, after a phone call to fiat on sat 24/4 i was told there was a recall coming up for steering column & electrics, which i was told on the monday 26/4 was not true, after many more phone calls fiat has agreed for my car to be checked at my local fiat dealer & the report to go back to head office, i will wait because my car is under 4yrs old done less than 20 thou on clock,i know of 3 more pandas with the same problem HOW CAN FIAT SAY THERE ISNT A PROBLEM ?, i will post the result of the checks being made...ps do you know there is a recall on the panda for the abs braking system i didnt wasnt informed by fiat, the garage told me....not good enough fiat

3) Steering is somewhat a major part of a vehicle don't you think? Thus, I repeat, I would not expect to replace the steering unit every 40,000 miles or so on any car.... would you?

How did I manage to miss this topic?

Young Emma! Jai I like :D

I got quoted £900 to have assembly unit and electric motor changed. Wrote to fiat got no reply so phoned spoke to a guy called Jameal (spelt wrong) who sorted it all out for me so now im just paying for the labour and for fiat to ring me when parts are in. Like you my car was low mileage only 22,000 so I were a bit miffed too. When you speak to fiat remind them taht its unsafe. I did state that my car was off road and I wasn't using it

I have just had the same problem with my 06 fiat panda active, its now in a fiat garage being repaired, fiat has agreed to pay 90% of the bill leaving me with a £57 bill thanks to Jameal for sorting this out,.....i still think there is a problem with the fiat panda, like you emma mine has only done just under 20,000 mileage

Not goood enough Fiat:rolleyes:...yet they pay 90% of your bill when technically your car is out of warranty and your not entitled to anything.

mileage means nothing....which is likely to fail first, a steering component on a car that has done 20k around town or 120k car that goes up and down the M6.

loads on citroen, vauxhall forums etc, have been for many years.

Never heard of a bravo unit failing mind you?

Me neither. Though 'every part works beautifully' ;) Not much issue with this on the Stilo either i don't think? Mine sometimes decides it doesn't want to stop steering left when i turn slightly, but a quick tug of the wheel soon makes it remember who's in charge, so i'm not getting into the 'pulling the car apart only to tell me there's nothing wrong' saga.

What puzzles you there?

The GP and Bravo have 5 years warranty, all other models 3.

Simples ;)

Only some do. Subject to all manner of terms and conditions if the Bravo warranty saga is anything to go by. The lady with 5 years is a lucky lucky girl.

The recall for the abs shouldve been communicated to you by letter, but since thousands of letters wouldve been posted, it's not beyond the realms of possibility for our wonderful postal service to have lost yours, which isn't necessarily Fiats fault. I agree the steering issue on Fiats seems to have been going on far too long, but Fiat is at least willing to contribute to repairs out of warranty. Try getting 90% outta the likes of Mini - you'd be trying a long time i can assure you.

You might be onto something with the mileage/use subject - most of the failures i've read about are on low mileage cars (possibly used round town).

The PAS unit went on my Mk2 Punto at 85,000 miles and 8 & half years old, but it was always used on the motorway, so may be some relation to useage. Luckily for me it went a week after i sold it, but i did feel bad for the new owner. He got it for a good price for a JTD tho.

EPAS units are always failing. I had a Corsa B which had electronic PAS and the head gasket went. One of the reasons I got shut is I knew if I had got the HG fixed the power steering motor would be next to go.

Folks,
Just out of curiosity, as one can still drive well (albeit a very heavy steering) can one continue to do so?

Will it affect anything else or cause any damage? Mine just dieded on me, but it's from the moment I start the car. So I know it'll be a "heavy" drive. I mean, I used to drive cars without steering assist, so... just wondering...

The trouble is unassisted cars have far lighter steering than cars with non-working power steering. I really don't think it's very managable unless over a very short distance.

Well, the problem is that it's expensive. Very expensive as due to poor distributorship, parts are hard to get by and hence, have been marked up absorbitantly... :(

But now that I've been driving without the PS for a week now, it's not that bad. It's only from standstill that I have problems with the Steering. Else, I'm lucky in my commute to work, I'm on the expressways and it doesn't pose much of a problem.
Heck, I actually, chuck it into the corners at higher speeds now coz it's feels more weighted! :)

Can't imagine that would pass an mot? Can the motor be removed, to reduce mechancial drag?

My Panda power steering has been moaning and groaning for several weeks now and my Fiat Garage informs me also that, although this is a 'very unusual' fault in such a new car, they can remedy the fault for the princely sum of £550 - most of this cost being the cost of the replacement motor. It sounds extremely likely that this should be considered cause for concern by Fiat.

My Mk2 Punto motor made groaning sounds for a couple of years before it died, and they always seem to make some sort of noise. However, unlike mine it sounds like your car is still under warranty so i would open a case with Fiat UK (00800 3428 0000) to see about getting the repair bill reduced or eliminated by them.

re the power steering unit/system is there any correlation between the failures and factors such as wider wheels/lower side walls, or has units with the normal 165/55/13's been affected as well or as much as those with 14/15 or larger inch wheels?

Hmm.. Good question, how many are on 13s?

Mines on 13" alloys (75,000 Kms/46,000 miles) so far with no current problems with steering. Famous last words probably.

I doubt it's related to wheels as there would be more widespread reports.

Guess it's just a random component failure... so far, nobody else that is driving a panda in my country is facing this issue. Hence, the cost of around 800quids for it... :(

800 quid IMHO, is cheap compared to the ridiculous price the dealership is charging in Singapore. 6 grand singapore dollars exclusing VAT and Labour, thats about 2.8K Pounds.

My Panda has 68K Kms when the Power Steering started to give me trouble. Sent the Motor to BBA Reman and it cost me 295 quid.

Well we have joined the ranks, warning light and no power steering has just hit our 04 Dynamic with 17k on the clock. I'm looking for a bit of comfort here chaps, after reading this thread I need it!

Is the failure always related to a major component? What chance a minor fault?is there anything I can check?

Is driving,10 miles or so, to the place I bought it a silly idea?

We bought second hand from a non Fiat dealer. We supposedly have a 12 month guarantee but I'm sure we are in for some serious haggling.

loads of reasons the stering light can come on, doesn't automatically mean a complete steering system which can be brought in parts anyway.

What is needed is a good garage with a good DET who is allocated a decent amount of time to pinpoint the fault......good luck with that as 99% will justtell you need a complete system:rolleyes:
