I have a problem with my punto mk2 steering wheel column.
There is a very badly irritating sound coming out of steering column itself.
I thought it was a faulty electric motor, removed it and tried to have a ride without it with hardened steering and the bad sound remained.
It is like something is broken in the column.
Then I removed the column totally and inspected it but there was nothing suspicious. Everything is fitted firmly and well and nothing is moving so that it could make such sound.
the only thing I think can be faulty is this (see the photo).

May be on the photo is not exactly Fiat Punto mk2 steering column, but you know what i mean.

What do you people think about this?

It sounds like plastic transmission in the column is broken. Very annoying and very loud, especially when riding on stones and gravel.
On the straight and good asphalt this sound does not exist at all.
It goes very smooth and very quiet.

I have the same issue, and as far as I know, it's not related to the power steering column, but with a teflon washer, but maybe someone knows better. Indeed it's irritating when driving on gravel.

much more info needed, if you've removed the motor and driven without it then its nothing to do with the 'powersteering' the noise should then in effect be there at all times running or not but only when you turn the steering wheel, otherwise nothing else is moving in that area. Could you not pin it down with the column removed from the car?

like ziggy I have no idea what your picture is pointing at? it could be ware in the column adjustment it could be a knackered UJ maybe damage to the steering lock? but so far all you've really said is there is a noise its somewhere around the steering column and its definately not the motor

Well, it's definitely NOT motor, because I am driving without it for a week for testing the column.
When I turn the steering wheel without moving vehicle, there is NO SOUND. It is absolutely OK.
When I drive on smooth surface, everything is OK.
No sound at all.
BUT! As soon as I go on gravel, that sound is making my brain ill :)

I think, there is some kind of transmission, exactly where the electric motor connects to the column. and I think that transmission is PLASTIC.
Can it be broken or something?

P.S. what is "teflon washer"?

Hi
I have exactly the same problem!

I could not do anything to it. It's too expensive to fix it in services that's why I decided to sell it :( besides that, electronic steering wheel fails very often.

I find the noise: this is the bearing of the column, connecting the electrical engine. I replace by an used one, and no more noise!

i replace this box

the noise was very loud when driving after disconnecting electrical engine, and disappeared when holding the bearing with hand.

hi
this is in the housing. But this is not torque sensor. The noise disappears when holding the shaft connected to the elec motor. et very loud when driving without elec motor.
