Hello, my Fiat Ducato from 2013 is currently in a garage in France due to cold weather causing starting problems, when I say cold it was -20.
I had new injectors fitted and new glow plugs fitted back in December.
The Van has been running super and I mean super, my mechanic prepped it for the tour around the Alps.
Initially the garage heated the engine up after it was towed there, this worked and off I went. I parked up about 1km and 2 days later the van would not start.
It is now over 2 weeks in the garage and they cannot find the problem, they have put a new timing belt on a new fuel filter a camshaft sensor and another sensor?
Now they say it is the turbo that has gone due to a particle filter??

I would very much appreciate any help as I don't have any confidence in the garage.

Again, the Van was running super smooth with no issues, it sits at 160,000km then 3 cold nights up in the Alps a start problem and now every conceivable problem, it really is quite stressful and costs are mounting.
HAS ANYONE HAD SUCH A CATASTROPHE AFTER EVERYTHING BEING PERFECT?

DPF (diesel particulate filters can, when blocked damage the turbo also, so not impossible however I would expect there to be other warning signs like excessive white smoke as engine ECU tried to do a REGEN on the DPF, also warning lights on the dashboard and poor performance. Ofen the cause of blocked DPF and failure to activate a full REGEN is doing short journeys with the engine unable to reach it correct operating temperature for long enough to activate the process.
Re the actual non starting, was the engine turning over on the starter at a normal cranking speed?
Obviously a diesel is a "compression ignition" so the engine needs to turn at a speed that the compression built up is sufficient to heat the air in the cylinder for the fuel to ignite, so slow cranking on a extremly cold day can be enough to prevent starting.
I assume engine coolant had enough antifreeze for the cold weather and coolant had not frozen, so engine not turning at all?
Apart from all that, if engine runs perfectly in mild temperature and you have no warning lights or messages on the dashboard, so the issue is only present in extreme weather, is it possible to see what other vehicle drivers use in those areas to manage the conditions, such as Eberspatcher? Diesel water /coolant heaters or similar to bring engine coolant up to an acceptable level prior to trying to start, or engine inlet air pre heaters etc.
If you can supply further details re engine series, capacity, model, etc. then others on Forum will have more model specific knowledge than I do.:)

Still has "summer" diesel in tank?
Get it taken back to your mechanic at home?
