Technical starting and running problems

I'm having a few issues with my fiat scudo 1.6hdi 2007.

A few weeks ago driving home from work my van just cut out, i pulled in at the side of the road and tried to start it it took a few attempts but eventfully fired up. I had a new fuel filter for it in my garage so changed it over when I got back home, just to rule that out.

It ran perfect for 3 weeks after that, then one morning I went out to start it and it wouldn't start, tried 10-15 times it would just crank over but not fire. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and it fired up first time, ran for 5 mins then died again. I done the same thing disconnected the battery and reconnected it started first time and ran for a good 30 mins, turned it off with the key and fired it back up half a dozen times, every time it started first turn of the key.

not sure if it would affect anything but both times my fuel level was pretty low, almost on the red...

any ideas what's caused it to cut out then not start?
