Morning All

I'll admit I'm not the most technical person, but can figure out/fix/change things, bit for the life of me, I cannot locate/see the starter motor. Is it hidden behind a cover that I need to remove from the side of the bell housing? I wish Haynes manual was in colour and could figure it out better. Any help / pretty pictures would be good [emoji16]

Haynes are a waste of money. They take pictures from all angles with no context making them meaningless.

The starter is at the back of the engine. Some say its accessible from above I personally dont think it is not entirely anyway.

Look from the gearbox end of the engine at about 2 o'clock you will see a 13mm AF bolt (M8) That is one of the starter motor bolts. The other is under the motor best accessed from under the car. You also have to disconnect the wiring easier from underneath.

at the back right hand side if you are looking from the front of the car. Battery side

only two bolts and an electrical connection

one bolt it from the right hand side and one isnt viewable on the left hand side

yes it can be done without jacking the car up. But its not as easy.

fills this hole

nothing else has to be taken off

Thank you for the picture! Turned out,
I wasnt far enough under the car to see it! Bit of a bugger to get to!

Your not wrong about Haynes. Thought things would have moved on from the likes of my classic 500 manual. Not a chance. Still black and white pictures, with no clue as to whats going on!

This video is about as wobbly as it gets but the job is the same on a FIRE engined 500 as a Panda or a Fiat built Ford Ka.

This is the 1.3 diesel but the starter is in the same location and it's not so nausea inducing to watch. Take out the battery tray for access to the top bolt. Then decide if it's easier to do the job from there or work underneath.

The starter top bolt often gets forgotten (and bent) when taking out the gearbox. If yours has ever had a new clutch and that bolt is tight, just replace it with a suitable 8.8 spec M8 bolt.
