My Punto 8v starts first time everytime from cold but runs for about 10 seconds then stalls.

When the fault developed the car was driving OK until i came to climb a hill-it stuggled up and when i opened the throttle no revs above a certain level-no extra power.

( It felt like the same problem i had years ago on an old car-no power when climbing-in that case the timing advance mechanism in the distrbutor wasn't working )
.
Back on the level it was OK for about a mile then stalled. I couldn't get going again, all it would do is start for a few seconds then stall as above. I had to be towed back home.

Ive changed the fuel pump, Carb and coil packs all from a running scrapper Punto but no change.

Ive since read people having similar problems with the Punto and it turned out to be a faulty crank sensor which is easily replaced. So i cleaned the sensor face but it made no difference. What exactly can go wrong with such a simple device anyway ?

What do you think ? Is it most likely the sensor or are there other possibilities ?

I presume the pump relay must be OK or else it wouldn't start at all.

Its a T reg Aug 1999 and 75k miles which isn't high for its age and the engine was sweet as a nut prior to the fault.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like ther sensor. They seem to break down internally. Hell, they're cheap. If no spark and no fuel past the injector, it will/must be the crank sensor. It's the bit that tells the ECU that the engine is turning, and that, therefore, it should do it's think and work the injectors, fire the plugs, etc.

Thanks for that, i hope so but wont be able to get one until at least wednesday cos of the extra Bank holiday.

Off de road a few days :(

Oh dear still no joy :(

I had a crank sensor taken off a Punto at the local scrapyard (£5 ) It makes no difference still exactly the same problem-start first time then stall after a few seconds.

The chances of the one i bought also being duff is pretty remote.

Any other ideas please before i scrap the damned thing ?

I changed the pump and there is juice at the inlet hose to the carb cos i pulled it off and checked.

Dunno if poss the filter ( under the back end of the car ) could be partial blocked but it seems unlikely.

Is the pump relay just for initial start or does it do something else ?

Could it be a faulty ECU ? I can pick one up cheap-its the only other thing i can think of.
